This is Amber. We lost her a few years back.
She was far and away the smartest dog we've ever had.
Actually it was more like she was the owner and we were the pets.

Teenie and Destiny both shelter cats. Teenie was 1 and Destiny was 3 when we got them.

Destiny had been at the shelter for 2.5 years before we adopted her. She was in basket that was labeled no children. She was aggressive but wouldn't follow though with her threats. She would bat at you with no claws and hit your hand with an open mouth but wouldn't bite. All the shelter cats would pick on her so she just sleep all day in a basket on top of the filing cabnet. They would leave her out at night so she could have free rain of the place while the other cats were put in their cages for the night. Destiny has a real thin rats tale and short stubby legs. Se looks like a cartoon pig.

Teenie is a scaredy cat. If some one knocks on the door she is under out bed hiding. She has no teeth because we had to have them removed. At first they removed all but 4. The vet left the top molars and the bottom fangs. A year and a half later they removed the remaining 4 teeth. Her gums would be sore and infected and the teeth would be loose. Her body was just rejecting the teeth. She still eats hard food because most cats swallow the food whole any way.

The best news is they are not even remotely interested in my RTi A7's grills.

I would also recommend for cat owners to take a look at the Litter Robot. It is an automatic litter box where you just have to take out and replace a bag in the drawer. No more scooping the litter box out. It is expensive but its also made really well and is a product of the USA.

This was my little buddy. I had to have her put down a couple years ago, because of her age. I wish you could do that with people. When she was a puppy, every time she would pee or ****, I'd say the word "pee" or "****". So it didn't take her long to figure out what it meant. So everytime someone would come by the house, I'd say "****" and she'd squat down and drop a deuce. I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I'm easily amused!

Here are some of my two dogs.

Fox was purchased with someone who will not be named  from a pet shop in the local mall. He was not planned, he just kinda happened (and thats ok since he's a dog, and not a baby ). He has always been my dog from the start even though he was mutually picked.

Chewey was purchased because I thought Fox needed a friend and well, I kinda always wanted a second dog. Chewey is my wifes dog so she got to pick him out. We got him from a rescue who saved him from a kill shelter. They say dogs take the personality of their owners... and they are right in both these cases.

My boy also passed away a few years ago. Can't say enough good things about the GS breed. Every breed has it's pro's and con's, but I'm a firm believer that dogs are not born good or bad, just like people. It's the owners that make them who they are.

I absolutely love white/light colored German Shepherds. My parents had a GS when I was a kid. It had originally belonged to my Grandfather who was an Indiana State Trooper. He trained her himself, and it was one smart animal. She had almost 50% silver hair on her front and underneath. I've always wanted to find another dog that looked like that.

Love the breed Herm, can't ask for a better buddy, loyal.....protector of your children and home. Takes a stern master though, a leader of the pack so to speak. The rewards are endless when done right.

Here are my three dogs. I had two when I met my wife.

Sophie the Weimaraner. She was my first dog, aside from the family dogs growing up. I got her a year and a half old from a shelter. Molly is the white and black mutt. I got her because Sophie had separation anxiety and the vet said a "friend" would help. Molly was six months old. The wife's dog was Otis, the Great Dane. He was 12 weeks old when we got him.

All cool **** dogs in their own way.

Sadly lost Sophie to cancer about a year and a half ago. 10 awesome years from her

Otis had Addison's disease. We lost him 6 months after Sophie. We got 6 great years out of him.

Molly is still kicking it, licking my kids faces every chance she gets. Age is getting her though, her face once all black now silver.

Thanks! There are some absolutely beautiful pets in this thread.

This is a horrible thing to say, but I've had family members die and it wasn't as hard as having to put my dog down. They just don't live long enough. The one thing I don't like about German Shepherds is that when they start getting old, they all seem to have hip and joint problems. My dog started having joint problems very early. She used to jump up and catch a Frisbee when she was younger and she'd sometimes land on an angle/sideways and she was never the same after. But everyone I know that has had a GS has had problems with hip dysplasia in their dogs and the medications only seemed to help for a very short time. I also think the cost of vet bills, surgeries, medications, Frontline, etc. have gotten a bit out of hand. They know an owner will pay just about anything and they are taking full advantage of that, nowadays. The vet I used retired, and the guy that took over nearly doubled his prices after buying the business. During my first visit with the new vet, he tried to talk me into buying dog food from him, rather than the pet store. He said what he carried was better because it didn't have unnecessary additives in it. It cost almost five times what a bad of Purina Dog Chow cost. Ridiculous.

Good dog food is not cheap. But costly does not mean it's what best for your dog either.

    I've settled on this brand:

    http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/

I think one of the problems that GS run into (on top of REALLY bad breeding for a long time) is people do not keep them in shape...

A fit GS should LOOK like it's almost starving. People bulk them up and let them get fat and too heavy. This is terrible for their hips. They were meant to be a quick, agile dog; not a beefy mastiff...
