Receiver Advice

Hey,

First timer on the forums here. Had a question, I was hoping someone with more knowledge could help me with.

I am trying to setup my first home theater and recently bought some polk speakers. Here is my current setup (3.1).

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V367 - http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V367BL-500-Watt-Channel-Receiver/dp/B003CP0K8C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333763891&sr=8-1

Front: Monitor60 Series II
Center: CS10
Sub: PSW10

Basically, I am wanting to know if that receiver is good enough for these speakers, and if not, what would you guys recommend. (Less than $400 preferably)

Keep in mind, I have no plans to upgrade in the near future as I am trying real hard not to get addicted and turn this into a hobby lol.

Would replacing it be a significant gain?

    Greetings Steven - and welcome to Club Polk!

    So - you already have the V367 AVR?

    If so, then if you are not displeased with what you are hearing then - it's good enough!

    Could it be better....oh...well....that is when you go down the rabbit hole - just like the rest of us :cheesygrin:

    I will say after looking at the V367 that it does not have preouts - so you are limited in a future upgrade path by adding an external amp.

    Cuz - I think those towers you have could definitely benefit from a good power amp for some grunt and headroom.

    just my 2cents worth.....

    H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

    I do already own the V367. I have had it for a few years and just had it power some old HTIB satellites.

    It sounds really good right now to me, but that is not saying much considering what I moved up from :)

    Is it possible to get a receiver capable of powering them appropriately? I could look into the power amp like you said, but that would involve buying a receiver with preouts regardless correct?

    Correct - you would have to move up from the V367 to a newer AVR that has preouts.

    And, you could consider doing it in steps by getting a 'beefier' AVR with preouts first, then adding a good external amp later...but...then...I've already put you on the slippery slope down into the rabbit hole - cuz then it becomes an endless 'but only if I upgraded the.....' :cheesygrin:

    I think I will take your advice and upgrade to a beefier AVR with preouts, and then go from there. I could always move the current one to the bedroom right ;) HAHA

    Welcome to CP-

    If you can stretch your budget a bit Costco has the Pioneer 1222K currently for $469. It's a rebadged Elite SC61. It would drive your system very nicely and it does have pre-outs if you ever did decide to ad an amp.

    Good luck and check your wallet at the door We're REALLY good at spending OPM...:wink:

    Was shooting for the $400 range, but can go higher if needed....

    AND.....this is where it starts getting out of hand... lol

    See my post above. For $469 IMO you won't do better. IIRC the SC61 is a $1200 unit...

    Ken's choice would be a good one.

    I was going to suggest used units to hit your budget for an avr with pre-outs.

    Kinda hard to find solid choices at $400 - precious few avrs have pre-outs at that price point.

    When I had my Monitor 60s I noticed a huge difference when I went from my old Sony receiver to the Marantz I have now. Your Yamaha is probably a tad better than that Sony but you could definitely notice an improvement with a more powerful receiver. Look in to refurbished and/or used receivers to get more bang for your buck. I bought mine refurbished and it's still going strong after almost 2 years.

    forget about any pioneer, sony, denon, onkyo unit. I have owned onkyo, denon, marantz, nad, rotel, pioneer, etc and NONE of them compare to the anthem units. Save yourself $600 and buy a used anthem mrx300. You will NOT ever FIND anything close to the sound quality of anthem receivers. Audessey is not even close to the ARC room correction. Save your money and get an anthem receiver. If you end up with any other receiver and then have the chance to audition an anthem unit, you will feel embarassed with how your music sounds. I did a write up that you might want to read. I gain nothing from continuing to say anthem is where the REAL high end performance is at. I made 3 different people from here go back to return their receivers and get anthem. All of them love it and i will say that it is as close as it gets to high end separates.
