I have a friend who just got an AR15 with a Trijicon Tao1 4x32 scope. Good lord, the scope and mounting kit were $800 alone!

I told him that is next up on my list.

What can you tell me about yours and how you got it/built it? I'm planning!

See above AR15.com is THE place for info. Mine ran $485 to build, and if you have the slightest of mechanical ability, it's easy. Download the lower assembly instructions from the site--its step-by-step. All you need is a punch and alot of patience.

The lower receiver is the only portion considered a "firearm" so it must be purchased through a dealer. The uppers are available on the internet and can be shipped to your front door. Just select what upper you want, 20", 16", etc...and the style, A2, A1, M4, etc.

The lower takes about 40 minutes to assemble provided you don't launch your pivot pin spring across the garage 3 times like I did.

Keep in mind, YOU MUST PURCHASE A PRE-BAN LOWER IF YOU WANT TO BUILD A PRE-BAN AR. Putting a pre-ban upper on a post-ban lower can land you in jail. AR15.com will explain what makes a weapon pre/post ban.

John, let me know if you need any help, and feel free to email me with questions on which lower to buy, best websites for uppers, assembly, etc. I've built 4 AR's and can do it in my sleep...

Yes it is easy to throw together an ar. Yes it will function and look bad ****, but what kind of groups do you get? For a truly accurate ar, you neeed a gunsmith for accurizing. Not that I am suggesting that people should not build there own weapons, on the contrary, everyone should build there own weapons! I got my start rebuilding a 1911. I could not believe the prices for custom combat work, and decided; "I can do that" and i did. three months later I was enrolled at the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School. Anyway its good to see Gun enthusiasts here.

Very nice. I too am into guns and have a few, I have gotten a likeing to the AR's I've been eyeballing the Colt H-bar competition $1000.00 or the Les Bear custom $2100.00, the Les Bear looks good and is supose to easily shoot groups that fit inside a quarter @100yds., but the price comes into play.

Les is a great smith, his 1911 are tack drivers I can only assume that the ar's are up to par. Get the Les Bear youl easily spend a thousand on the colt to get it to shoot good.

Aside from a good trigger job, there's not much accurizing needed on an AR--but this should be done by a gunsmith, AR trigger mechanisms are VERY EASY to screw up if you don't know how and what to polish.

My AR routinely prints 1" groups at 100yds with match grade ammo.

Competition uppers are available everywhere, as well as competition trigger sets. Just depends on how much you want to spend on the project. If you use good parts, you'll have an AR that performs every bit as well as any Bushmaster/Armalite, and you'll do it for at least 35% less cost.

For ultimate accuracy, stay away from chrome lined barrels; however chrome lined barrels do offer better wear resistance.

See the Rock River Arms website for a plethora of uppers; from basic GI Issue to 26" exotic varmint uppers...
