Where to stay around Trenton NJ

My wife's hell bent on going to this sculpture place called Grounds for Sculpture for her birthday which is at the end of November. The plan is to drive up in the morning from Baltimore, look around the place and leave in the late afternoon to have dinner somewhere and spend the night at a hotel. We've been there before; when we were dating we went and afterwards stayed in a B&B in Ocean Grove for the night and had dinner in Asbury Park. It was ok, but would like to try some place else.

Looking for suggestions on places to stay for the evening. Technically the place is in Hamilton, NJ which is NE of Trenton around the intersection of Rt 1 and 295. Would like to end up within an hour's drive west or south after we get done. My goal is to spend $200 for the night at the hotel.

Any suggestions?

Ben, since the wife likes sculpture I suggest a trip to Brookgreen Gardens instead. Just incredible.

Trust me, the only other place besides Trenton that we'd be going is someplace quite remote with a shovel. Not certain who'd be digging and who'd be planted, but that's where I'm at right now.

I'm hoping to get away with headed into PA and have dinner at a brewery some where. That's a best case scenario.

In reality, I think it'll be more like one of those restaurants where you get 15 plates with a piece of food worth about 50 calories and a garnish that looks like an exotic bird (that you can't eat, of course). Afterwards, I can see myself being paraded around a hotel room (that'll cost me $400) with my junk duct taped between my legs while she laughs and eats real food.

I may loosen the drain plug on the oil pan of the car and start driving. It may cost me an engine, but at least I'll retain my dignity.

I've stayed at the Hampton Inn off exit 5 on the Turnpike....that's probably as close to Trenton I would get.

Or maybe you could break a storefront window and be "safe and secure" in a police holding cell for the night. lol

Trenton has always been the brunt of jokes for those of us who grew up in surrounding states (Pa., N.Y., etc.)

Grounds for Sculpture is a slick place but if your wife is that gung ho about going, she might end up on the disappointed side. It's a nice visit though and there's enough other places locally to it that if it ends up being a bust, you'll still have something to do.

I don't have much help on places to stay in that area though. It's only like 40 minutes from me so I never really looked at hotels near by.

However, I wouldn't go too far in to Trenton. It's not a good town after dark and there isn't much of a nightlife at all. You'll want to head towards the Hamilton/Mercerville area or head up Route 1 towards Princeton Junction. Much nicer areas and all the typical big name hotels are up that way. Only about 10-15 minutes away from Grounds for Sculpture too.

Never stayed there, but dined there once. Well worth the visit. Nassau inn in Princeton is ok too. If you go into Princeton, the Triumph Brewing Company can be a fun stop. If any of this sounds good, let me know and I'll suggest a few more options.

Depending on what you decide, I'd love to by you a beer at Triumph...
