When two channel listening how far back.....
Hello,
So when you're listening to two channel do you make an equilateral triangle from your speakers do you sit further or closer do you let the room dimensions dictate where you sit ( this was me even though I've read it a hundred times or more I never tried to form a triangle. The main sitting area is back about 14')
So this afternoon I spent some time listening from 8' toeing in the speakers first about a 1/4 " then 1/2" then an inch and finally back to a1/4" as this toe in sounded best.
Now even at 14' things sounded fine but I could certainly notice a marked improvement in the sound stage at the 8' point.
As the room doubles as a HT / Music setup I can't leave the chair planted in the middle of the room but it quite easy to move got to love hard wood and good sliders under the chair legs.
Thoughts opinions ?

Just experiment yourself and see what works best for you. All rooms will have different acoustics, and even within the room there will be different acoustics.
Coincidentally, I sort of went through this last night after I put the room back together after poker night. I decided to put the chair a couple of feet closer to the rack, which is between both speakers. This was the first time since I added my new preamp and amps that I tried it this close. I had done it for awhile with the previous gear, and it seemed okay, but it was better a few feet further back. However, this time it sounded harsh with some high frequency distortion. It was edgy, and grainy. Again, after I pushed the chair back a few feet it cleared up. It might have been the music since I was playing my R&R playlist, and many of those songs aren't the best recorded. I need to revisit this tonight and see if it happens again.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

make an equilateral triangle from your speakers
That would be optimal, but like others have said, every room is different and not always possible. Plus a lot of us have wives to contend with which keeps us from making our homes into frat houses.
Set it up whatever way sounds best to you. That requires some experimenting on your part. There is no right or wrong, just what works in your room to your ears.HT SYSTEM-

One option I have read about is the 38% rule. I believe it states that you chair in an avg size room should be 38% of the total room length measured from the front or back wall. I get as close as I can to that measured from the back wall. It does make a noticeable difference audibly, and you can see the effect in rew as well.

Thanks for the link it was an interesting read. -
So over all and not surprising in the least what ever sounds best to your ears is the best placement. As there is so many variables no one formula could work for every room. But having a couple of formulas as benchmarks to start from sure helps.
Thanks for the input.

pretty much I tried a few recommendations, regarding speaker placement, toe, distance from a wall and chair placement. I compromised with what sound the best, and looked pleasing .HT Rig Samsung 64F8500 |Pioneer Elite BDP-52FD|Pioneer Elite VSX-32| Two Carver TFM-15cb Bridged for mains|Polk Audio RTiA5 Cherry|Polk Audio CsiA6 Cherry|Polk Audio T-15 Heights|Polk Audio FXia6 Surround|DIY 8cuft Dayton Ultimax 15" powered with a Crown XLS1000
