Please help repair 10Bs, need 2 x MW6501

I bought a pair of Monitor 10Bs and believe I need two 6501 drivers. One is frozen and has no "bounce" to the cone. I haven't wired the speakers up but figure this driver is toast. Am I wrong? On another driver the microfilament copper lead soldered to the front of the cone is gone. The seller said this was the bad driver. He didn't say anything about the frozen one and this was a private cash sale. But hey, I got 'em cheap. The drivers were installed in July 1984. It appears Polk no longer sells the 6501 but instead supplies a 6600X. I'd just as soon have a pair of originals and will also be watching ebay. Thanks in advance for any help; my neighbors can't wait to hear these monsters.

If the driver does not move when you press down on the cone, it is dead.
Good luck in sourcing vintage drivers. Check out the parts list, for Monitor series, and watch other models....albeit w/ 6501 drivers. It could turn out to be easy, or a long hard road.
TIP: Buy the new ones, you will save yourself alot of time, and possible problems.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
I have 2 pairs (4 ea) of the MW6500. I am not sure what model they went into but it may have been the Monitor 10a.
Condition is used but they work ok. Let me know if interested, I would like to sell all 4 at once.If you are not judgemental, you don't care enough. -
I wonder if the 6500s would work. Would I have to replace the two good 6501s to be consistent and would the 6500 work with the crossovers in the 10Bs? If so, please consider me first in line, assuming the condition is good and we can agree on price.

Jack - I don't think you can get any luckier than Manamps' offer. While they may not be the listed drivers for that model, I cannot imagine that you would have a problem with using them.
I would pick them up, if I were you.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
dorokusai, I think you're right. Manamp, let's work out a price and I'll take all four. You can PM me.

Guys,
Before you all get excited, please see pictures. I will need to dig them out. I got them as a lot a while ago so I am unfamiliar with the exact condition. However I did test them and all of them gave me signal.
Send me an email where I can send you picts etc.

Manamp - You could arrange w/ Jack, to ship him two of them, and after he is able to test them, close the deal...or some variation of that idea. But both of you are new, so maybe Polkie faith is not the notion right now....I am sure you guys will work something out.
Good luck!CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

Thanks. -

Looks like some Big Blue BadAssed Caps ya got there. Whats the story?

Oh, 160volts and 33000 uF. 3 inches wide and 6.25 inches tall. (The caps I mean).
I am doing a full upgrade on an Adcom 555II for a guy. .... yup thats the bottom of the chassis, if he sees it like this he might get a heart attack, lol.If you are not judgemental, you don't care enough. -
I have an old counterpoint SA12(Tube,FET hybrid) thats needs some work. It has teenie little half assed 9700ufX4 grey caps and I was thinking about replacing them. what do ya think?
The counterpoint has noise in the right channel but I can't see anything visable and have no schematics. I was thinking about(for the hell of it) replacing damn near everything on the board. Not sure though when I'll have time.

I like counterpoint amps, but they tend to be moody.
I do not work with FET/ MOSFET amps too much.
You could change the caps, it depends on the voltage they run at. I have some 63v 15000uF caps.
However I'd say get it working first...If you are not judgemental, you don't care enough. -

Twins, as in babies? Congrats. Or twins, as in amps? And thanks to dorokusa1 for his input.

Twins as in Hbombtoo progressed from 1/4twin to 1/2twin to twin !If you are not judgemental, you don't care enough.

Hey HBomb, just completed work on the Adcom 555II you partially saw with big caps. Attached is a picture next to a stock 555.If you are not judgemental, you don't care enough. -
Thanks for the headsup. I'll let you know when I get them.
-
What's the output now on the Adcom? What will those (very large) caps do as opposed to the stock caps?
Dan -
375 watts RMS before clipping into 8 ohms and 560 watts RMS into 4 ohms. My test bench AC had dipped to 114 vac from the normal 122vac I have, during the test.
This means had my AC outlet been high current, the 8 ohm clipping would have been over 400 watts per channel.
I did not conduct tests into 2 ohms as I do not have 2 ohm dummy loads, but I'd estimate it to be close to 900 watts RMS steady not peaks. The only bottleneck is the heatsink temerature rise for 2 ohm drive. Depending on the type of music you hear, it could be a non-issue OR you be trip the thermal breakers (as you would in the stock 555) after a few hours.
Let me add the the output stage has been upgraded from the stock 1200 watts dissipation capability to 2000 using Motorola's rugged work horses.
The larger caps give over twice the capacitance of the stock caps.
How capacitance affects sound is a whole new topic..
