One of the classic Teac decks, three motor rock stable transport mechanism. Usually the capstan belt needs replacing, but Teac still offers parts, I believe the belt is around $18.00. The pinch roller should not be cracked or have a glossy surface where the tape meets it. The record and playback heads should have a wear pattern less than 3mm for best recording/playback performance.
The price is more than fair, especially since he's including some tapes.

Thanks Ken i emailed him. He also had some beautiful Advents too Id like to see. I heard R2R years ago & i never forgot how good it sounded on a Pioneer sx727 which Jimmy still has :)

I agree with Ken. Great deal (assuming there is not excessive wear). Great deck and the R 2 R sound is phenominal!

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Good sturdy deck but old - I guess I'd worry about two things not yet explictly mentioned:

    1) "just cleaned before stored away" doesn't make me feel too warm and fuzzy... e.g., if it were stored away 25 years ago!
    2) Check the heads for wear - chances are, if it was a hobbyist's deck, they're like new, but they could be very worn. Oops, Ken mentioned the heads already!

So can you plug in a source into the R2R & then record onto tape. Will this work. I relize i should do more homework on R2R but some easy questions will be harmless. Im going to look at it tonight. He says he has 6 new in the package tapes & quite a few recorded classical-jazz ones. He had it reconditioned & serviced before he stored it 10 years ago. Are those things i should br looking for noticeable to the eye ? Or does it need to be opened up ? Im thinking of hooking it to the Marantz-i think it should sound pretty good on it ? Any feedback would be helpful . Ive been eyeing r2r for a few years . TIA

yes, it can be "driven", so to speak, by any line-level source (e.g., the output of a phono preamp, or the outputs of a tuner or a CD player or another tape deck, or line-level outputs from a computer/soundcard). For maximum flexibility, one typically hooks the tape deck "in" and "out" (REC and PLAYBACK) to the TAPE MONITOR loop on a receiver, preamp, or integrated amplifier. Then one may take advantage of the source switching and - as appropriate - the phono preamp/EQ of the receiver/preamp/integrated.

Never turn down new or prerecorded tapes in good condition! :-) The one exception applies to certain vintage reel to reel tapes that were made with a particular "back coating" which has deteriorated over the decades. Such tapes will do some harm if used today. Google "tape sticky-shed syndrome" for more info than you could shake a stick at! ;-)

Here, for example, we observe the contents of a CD being subjected to archival back-up in the analog domain ;-) directly onto tracks 1 and 3 of a four-track TASCAM (TEAC's "pro"/commercial brand) "prosumer" 22-4 deck. Why Tracks 1 and 3, I hear you ask? ;-) This gets a little esoteric, but that format is more-or-less identical (close enough for Government work!) to the standard consumer "quarter-track stereo" tape recording format which is used by the titular TEAC A-4010S and virtually all other consumer decks.

No clue about those "Advents"... I'd recommend proceeding with caution unless they're really cheap...
(as I am sure you know, the Advent name passed through several owners post-Kloss; not all products bearing the name are "real Advents")

EDIT: Have you learned the ancient, arcane, and venerable art of "resurrounding" yet? :-)
It's fun; all the cool kids are doin' it!

Speaking of sort-of Advents and refoaming ;-)

    after:
    refoamed Advent legacy.jpg

(and not half-bad sounding loudspeakers, despite their latter-day, less than purebred "Advent" pedigree)

EDIT: Postscript - after I re-habbed these, I gave them away... but a year or so later another pair, in better overall cosmetic shape, appeared at my favorite local emporium in MA, so I now have another pair of these to refoam - someday! :-)

Ooh, those do look quite promising indeed - much better quality drivers (by the looks of 'em) than I expected. Sorry I almost led you astray! :-(

Oh no. I ended up getting the r2r 6new 20recorded + speakers + Teac cass tape player (needs belt) for dirt cheap 160.00 so it was worth the drive. I might sell the speakers depending on how much like the sound because of there size. But they are beautiful & quite heavy

I find that R2R in 2 different bands were used professionally in 2 entirely different ways. With the Grateful Dead you had SBT (sound board tape) that were eventually used to stow/ vault away and used to produce both Dick's Picks and Bear's Choice and w/ the AUD audience tapers allowed to record either w/ boom mics or also if ports permitted into the sound boards later to be called Betty's Boards.
The other band that utilized taped prerecorded material was Pink Floyd who fully admit that their second set was taped to the nano second to coinside with the special effects and and the circular video screen that both rotated and then had varri lights surrounding the thing while tilting and having lazers shown off at differing angles to culminate w/ the giant mirrored ball after it revealed it's self and going to the white light effect.
For personal use my friends were Dead tapers for the most part and traded for shows that they wanted or bartered for shows to complete a run of shows or a particular era or like a New Years Eve run w/ NYE being the show I would go to and then having something to compare it with.Likw w/ anything else , some tapers had it down to a science and were not hassled at most Bill Graham concerts and others were strickley prohibited. Most managers saw this as infringement rights and would lose out on royalties and on publishing rights. The TEAC shown were the home base units and generaly used was a cassett deck to be dubbed onto R2R for better resolution.
