Volume levels for sound quality

I use my computer for music and I'm wondering what I should set the different volume levels to for the best sound quality. I mean should I set the volume in the music player I'm using, and the main computer volume to max or a little below it and adjust the volume on the receiver to the level I want? Is there a generally universal rule for setting the volume levels?

How do you have your computer connected to the receiver?

Set the PC to max volume, and adjust the volume with your receiver/preamp. You want the PC to do as little signal processing as possible.

I have found with analog connections it's best to have the software at max and the pc master volume at 90%. With digital I am not even sure you can adjust the master volume on the pc.

A USB DAC to RCA cables.
