Just a "heads up" on what may be an interesting film.

Review from San Francisco Chronicle....

SI.com has had some great articles on this as of late. The respect I once had for Tagliabue is long since gone. I can't tell if Goodell has been moved by the evidence, or moved by the majority. Either way, I'm not sure what the solution is here, and neither are the creators of the documentary.

Peter King has a quick interview with the authors here (scroll down some):

    The MMQB: Should football exist?

Steve: Since I have season-tickets for the 49ers, I hope so. I don’t mean to be flippant about it. But we love the sport. I played the sport in high school, and that was a major life experience for me. I don’t think in any way would we want to minimize that. It is a game, but it is a big part of our culture. At the same time, these are real issues.

I saw a lot of it and read a bit about it before it came on. My impression is that Goodell came to the realization that football is doomed unless this issue is fully understood and action is taken. Before that he seemed to be approaching it like the tobacco industry did with cigarettes: obfuscate and deny.

I thought it very encouraging that they donated $1,000,000 to research and threw their weight behind getting ex players' families to donate brains for research. Lots of questions though: there must be some sort of genetic predisposition to CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) since many former players don't seem to be so afficted.

Felt really bad for Mike Webster, what he must have gone through.

I saw it and thought it was a very good documentary. As a huge fan of pro and college football, I thought the NFL looked pretty bad due their history of ignoring the science until recently. What was eye-opening was the assertion that not only multiple concussions have an adverse effect on the brain, but the repetitive, average hits which players absorb every day can lead to issues long-term. I also thought the story about Troy Aikman getting knocked out of the playoff game with the 49ers in 1994 was pretty creepy.

This is definitely a must-watch guys next time it runs on your local PBS....
