Many stores use potentiometers (or "pots") in line to speakers. These variable resistors allow easy volume matching of speakers of different sensitivities for A-B auditioning.

Only such use I am aware of, but is not a tweak and would serve no purpose in a home system.

What you are describing sounds like it may be a Zobel. They are often used to smoth out impedences in speakers, but many speakers have one in the crossover already.

Do a google on "zobel, zobel network, or zobel filter" and see what you can come up with. The single driver forum may also have good info.
