So long to my 2-channel room

edited September 2013 in 2 Channel Audio
For years, I have enjoyed having a music room setup in my basement. It's been great having a space, small though it may have been, that was completely dedicated to 2-channel audio. No tv screens allowed, and nothing containing the word "processor" allowed in the system! It's been an amazing experience to have a man-cave like this, and I've rolled so many pieces of equipment of every kind through the system.

However, my son is now in his senior year of high school, and once he graduates my wife and I are going to downsize. The house will be going on the market in six months time. Having lived here for 18 years, there's just so much to do. Things to go through, get packed up and organized for the move, or stuff to give away, throw away, donate to charity, sell, etc. Then there's the fixer upper projects that need to get done before we start showing the house to buyers.

Well, the biggest thing to tackle is the basement. The storage area needs to get packed up and cleared out, and then we're going to have to do some work fixing up that space in the basement. So the music room has been turned into the staging area for all that we are starting to get packed up.

For the time being, I've moved my turntable, tube phono/pre-amp, sacd player, and squeezebox into my office to use with my headphones. I've got Audeze LCD-3's, so I'm not exactly slumming it in headphone land. But still, I'm sad to see my music room go and to know that I won't be hearing my SDA's again until I'm living somewhere else. For now, time to start packing!
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I will gladly take any "Donations" from your 2 channel room

That does stink. Myself I am still trying to get to the point where I can have both a dedicated 2 channel and dedicated HT setup. Still a youngin' but I cant imagine how it stinks to have it, then not.

Hopefully your new place will allow you something similar for your 2 channel gear. If not, please refer to my first sentence

Definitely not planning on getting rid of anything. I've spent too much time planning out a system around CRS+'s, with the idea being that I'd have something that works well in a small space. Next stop will be an apartment that we'll rent, and there is a bunch of stuff that we'll be holding on to but not necessarily bringing to the apartment that we move to, so we'll also be renting a storage room. The only stuff from the 2-channel room that won't be coming to the apartment will be all the GIK acoustic panels and corner traps, but those will go into storage.

    Appreciate the offer though!!

I know how you feel dude. When we moved from Bethany OK in our 1962 house to our 2011 newer home. Technically it was only 100 sq ft downsized, but the other house had a dedicated 2nd living room for media etc that was 20x20. I had to sell 95% of my equipment since we had no where to put it. I made the conscious decision to sell it all and put the funds towards my yet to be born daughter. Who know in 18 months time we'd move to a larger house again with the ability to do 2 channel and dedicated theater. I had room for neither in the last home. I think however like you, in 18 years when she goes to college we may downsize - no idea how it will be then. I wish you luck on your new venture - I do not envy your task of packing/cleaning/sorting/etc.

It's not as bad as it sounds. I've known this move would be coming for some time now, so I've been focused on building a system that I can take anywhere. I may not end up living somewhere with space for a whole home theater setup, but I don't care where I live, I will have a stereo. So I've got a system that lives on fairly small rack, with fairly small speakers (by SDA standards...). We are planning on purging a lot of our possessions that we've amassed over the years, including the home theater stuff in the family room (hoping whoever buys the house wants it). But the stereo is a keeper! I just need the room as a place to start piling things up as they get packed.

Hehehe, good to know you will get to keep your stuff, especially the SDA's and those spiffy stands. As you no doubt guessed my offer was more tounge in cheek than anything as I was quite sure you were going to hold onto almost everything .

Actually George, I am looking forward to it. Yeah, the whole packing thing sucks, and I love my house, but I'm ready to see our paychecks stick around the bank account, rather than going into the lawn, roof, driveway, heating oil, property taxes, etc. etc. Our house is way bigger than what we need now, and once my son is off to school, it will be great to shed all the expenses.

Ah, it's Larry's stands that you're after, eh? The person who will get those from me will find out about it when my estate is in probate!

    Freddie Mercury.

Too much sweat equity in those. They are speakers for life. Go grab yourself a nice pair of CRS+'s and start building! As for the stands, those will be hard to find!

LOL, yeah I know.... maybe one-day. For now my RTA 11TL's + Carver Sonic Holigraphy is as close as I can get to the SDA effect. My room is 11x10 and filled to the brim with stuff.... no room to properly space SDA's so no reason to buy them right now.

Good luck with that. Personally, I don't believe in "downsizing", but that's a fight my wife and I will have when we retire. No plans to move out of anything till then even though I suspect I may be older than you are, and I still have a 16 year old at home. But our boy, 27, is in Chicago.

No, I see myself as the (Apical) head of a future household that will need not only a "dedicated" two channel room but a couple more rooms with audio in them and extra bedrooms for future grandchildren, etc. And a "basement" is an ABSOLUTE requirement. I hate to imagine myself some old **** living in a two bedroom condo! lol

That said, packing is NO fun! Hope you survive it!

Been there! Feel for you! lol Two prioritizations took place. First was gettig rid of stuff before putting the house on market; the second occurred when the house sold 4 days after listed and we had to be out in 30. ;)

...I may not listen to my system every night, might even go a week without it. But, knowing that I can go in there and fire it up when I want to is peace of mind. I don't know what I'd do without it honestly. 2CH is almost like meditation for me.

Agree, that's why I'm keeping the two-channel around as long as I can. I've got a killer headphone amp and LCD-3's, plenty of killer listening to be done between now and when the rest of the gear gets packed up.

I'm glad you planned ahead, but completely understand about the room. You should take a pair or two of those panels with you so you can do mild treatment though.

We'll need to see what kind of space we're going to have, can always pull a couple of pieces out of storage.

Just need to shed the expense base, sick of seeing the check book evaporate every month. And those aren't even the months when I buy some hifi gear!

I can sympathize with that. And my wife complains about it more than I. I'm just a "fatalist" when it comes to having to put out cash! Death and taxes, what can you do? lol

While we actually p/md each other w/ an invite to your house to boot I really feel bad about this. There is hope if planned out though.I believe most here have seen my rack and while not dedicated to 2-chl. only it's hangs among all my other gear and me personally use all my sources through my 2 chl. when the desire arises. This may or may not be Kosher w/ some of you but like I've said many times before I like the variety of it all. Me in a 1 bdrm apt all my gear in my living room w/ nothing stacked or underfoot ,it's doable.Just as a reminder here's what is possible. the SDA 2bs shoe horned in and the rack has all my gear and the Klipsch smalls are strategically placed to the outer edges of the lps but not hindered in any way w/ my other 2 sets of speakers spred around the room.My living rm btw is 18' x 15'.
