We have Verizon and have been able to use one of their services to block some telemarketers calls but one in the last week is driving us crazy. Today they called at 5:55 am :( Problem is we can't use Verizon to block as the number is just a 7-digit one, no area code. How do we block this as i investigated the 7 digit number and there are numerous, no lots, of complaints about it.

I either don't answer those or pick up the phone and before they have time to utter ONE WORD, I say, Joe's House of Pizza, what you want? Large Pepperoni and green peppers, or some stromboli? We deliver. Then hang the freak up! They call again, Joe is still taking orders! After a few of these. They disappear.

Can't turn the ringer off. I am a volunteer driver for an organization and sometimes get calls from them pretty early in the morning to take someone somewhere so need to get that call.

while I like the idea of Joe's House of Pizza i am not that awake at 5:55 in the morning to be THAT coherant :)

The Do Not Call Registry works pretty well, however, note the exceptions below.

The following is taken from the NDNCR website...

If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?

No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. However, if you ask a company with which you have an existing business relationship to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request. You should keep a record of the date you make the request.

There are several companies that change there number and do not honor the do not call list(some times they don't even pickup). With ooma we can setup a white list I think.

You could get a burner phone for your driving calls. I don't think they are allowed to call cell phones at the moment.

Offshore telemarketing firms don't care about the list. They spoof calling line Id's.
Some are outright frauds, posing as your credit card company or as Microsoft.
Others are spoof charities, like the one for Texas Police fund.
Bottom line, they do want they want because they are hard to trace down and
    impossible to do anything about.

Or do what I do, turn the tables on them and ask them if they would lend you some $$. I always try to get personal with them and ask them about themselves. Then say "Joe" or whatever their name is I feel like we've been friends for years, would you lend me a few hundred bucks until I can clear this bankruptcy problem I've been having. They usually never call me back.

I still have a land line at home.

I have it set to be answered by an answering machine in one ring.

All the person on the other end hears is a computer generated voice saying that your call is being answered by an answering machine...BEEP.

All my friends know to just start talking. And no telemarketer has ever done anything other than hanging up. Some times that line rings more than 50 times a day. And no message is ever left.

When I answer my land line you have 2 seconds max to start talking, or I hang up. These phone calls are robo-dialed so it takes the telemarketer a few seconds to realize it has been answered, but by then I have hung up. They never call back.

Thanks for all the inventive ways of answering the phone but i don't want the phone to ring...much less talk to anyone. Do those call blocker machines work pretty well??
