Hey all. A friend of mine is offering me his Polk R40 floorstanders. They are kinda old...but they are in like-new condition. I currently have a 3.1 setup with tsi100 fronts,cs10 center and psw110 sub. I was wondering should I take them and use my tsi100 as rears and use the R40s as fronts. I know they are not similar model series and they are older, but I'm running them off a denon avr 1613 with audyssey auto-cal. Would the auto-cal copensate for that? Thoughts?
My Setup: Denon AVR X3600h, Polk Signature S50 Fronts w/ S30 Center and S15 Rears, LG UBK90 4K Player, TCL 6-Series 65”4k TV

Depends, I would ask how much they will cost. If you can get them at a great price, go for it.
Personally I would do it, I think the R40s will provide you with a much better front soundstage, also will allow you to get some surrounds into your setup (5.1).

Set them all to "small" and cross them at 80hz as a starting point, you can always change that around and see what sounds best.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Thats the best part...just talked to my friend...he'll give them to me at no cost! Can't beat that :-) how would it sound even tho they are not timbre-matched? The audyssey did good with my current setup...hoping it would do the same with these added...or maybe I should use the R40 as my rears?

As near as I can tell, the R40s would seem to be timbre-matched just fine with your center, both use 5 1/4" mids, though slightly different tweeters, but that should not make that much difference IMO.

Since there seems to be zero risk on your part, try the 40s as fronts, I do not think you will be disappointed.

I got the r40s....and hooked them up. I reran audyssey and....it sounds pretty good :-). Even though they are different series, it doesn't seem to sound like they are...to me anyway lol. Not bad for free ;)

I did some research, and according to Polk's FAQ section, the cs2 center channel is a match for my r40s. Surprising to me since the cs2 has 6.5 drivers ...figured the r40s would be better matched with the cs1 with 5.25 drivers. Since I have the cs10(basically a cs1) I figure it matches well with the r40s.

On another note...how would the r40s compare to the tsi300s? Both have the same size drivers, except for the tweeters...prob different x-overs too. Any input would help. Thanks :-)
