I am looking to spend under 700 on a sub. I am looking at the PSW-505, for $499, but i dont know what else is out there for my price range. And the yamaha setup is very good for what i need, and where I live is the best reciever you can buy, aside from a 100 watt DENON, and a 200 watt sunfire (very badass) but way out of my price range......so the 130 watt x 7 is best for me, considering it is already overdriving my surrounds by 20 watts, and has all the features of the sunfire, except for one extra component video input on the sunfire, and sheer wattage output.

P.S. the only polks that are upgrades to mine are the LSi15's, and they were $400 more each.....and i didnt like the built in sub.

    Hi theatre_man,

I see you are from neighboring eye da ho. ;) I'm in Spokane, WA.

I voted for a new sub for your system.. While Polk subs do ok.. they don't quite measure up to some of the other brands out there. I had a Polk PSW350 for yrs.. just three months ago I went with an SVS 20-39PCi. and have loved it to death. Msg me if you want to come up to Spokane some weekend and demo it at my place. :D

Hey is Steiners electronics still in business down there? They sell Polk speakers.

Regarding the other post, Theater_man, just try to be more objective. Don't say something sounds a certain way, unless you heard the sound yourself. A lot of people make this mistake at first.

You guys are crazy. There is NO player I've heard for the bottum dollar (new with warranty) that can beat that Yamaha player!

(I own that player, so dont be trashing it to bad.) It's been through me for 2 years now. GREAT piece of gear. IMO

    I say upgrade the speakers......to Polks.....lmao.....

I'd get a universal DVD player with SACD and DVD-Audio. Then upgrade your sub.

    Subwoofer: Paradigm Servo 15 v.2

Please post suggestions, and url's for pics if you know them.

Outrageously good system for a teen... Congrats.

Sorry if I jumped a little bit before, but posting what you know and want to know works best.

The gang at SVS will help you pick the right sub for you and well within your budget. Do let us know what you nab and how you like it.

Plays SACD's, DVD-A's, CD's, MP3's, CD/CDRW, so on and so fowarth. Will take care of all your format needs for now.

It has a digital out, so if you wish to acquire the next step in audio quality - purchasing a DAC will be an option for you. Good Dac's thankfully do not cost an arm and a leg, though you might want to be prepared to spend more on the DAC, than on the player itself. Its worth it.

Sean, it is one of the coveted entry level machine with a lot of potential, modded that is. Here is a link of a $695 investment including the machine, that will make anybody smile...

I can vouch to the integrity of Alex, based on his work on my Philips, and trust his opinions on what constitutes a significant sound improvements. I am still debating whether I want to try this machine instead of another tube stage machine...
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Interesting read, I've never thought about modding a DVD player like that. One problem if you like movies on this particular instance:

" After the mod is done, the surround channels are disabled."

Also for that kind of money, u might as well get a good Denon.

you guys need to stop dissin' the warf's, because they sound really good, and from what they have at my electronics store, they are the second best to some polk LSi15's, but i couldn't afford them so stop telling me they suck because i know from experience, that they are great speakers.

I just re-read this entire thread and the only "dissin'" of the Warf's were followed by a :)
If the weak link in your system is the one Polk product you own, then so be it.
Maybe you should be on the Warf forum :) < note smiley

    PT,
multichannel is an option, but cost additional $125 I believe, and all the MC stage will be replaced with upgraded solid state. On my Philips, I kept the MC at no cost. For that kind of money, I would argue that it will outshine Denon, I have a Denon DVD-3800 stock that sounds great on redbook, but compared to the modded Philips, it doesn't stand a chance.

Has anyone noticed how the brand new Wharfedales look like the brand new Sony's? The both have the same base on their floorstanding speakers, and they both have yellow speaker cones. Just an observation, not a dis.
