I just found someone selling a McIntosh MC250 for a $100 what do I need to look out for with this amp? I know caps go bad over time he says it works good but will see.

So what do I need to know about this before I get into it.

Thanks. John

Not one of their greatest sounding amps and it's probably due for a recap.

The guy is local well see but I am thinking I will look it over very well and well a recap for me would not be a issue I have 90% of the caps needed on my bench. Why is it not the best sounding amp?

Its's very early solid state ( yuck). They had none of the magic of their tubed units of that era like the MC240,MC275 etc.

The MC-250, MC-2100 and MC-2105 go for stoopit money on the open market for what they sound like, IMO.
A hunnert smackers for an MC-250 in working condition would be cheap - but still wouldn't, IMO, be a great use of a C-note.
Autoformer coupling notwithstanding, this family of amplifiers to me has a harsh, grainy, unrefined sound typical of early solid state hardware (indeed, the "tone" is that of the amps that gave solid state a bad name).

Just my opinion of course (as an MC-2100 owner).

Yes, a complete rehab should help considerably, but the starting platform is meh at best. Save your pennies and buy an MC-225 when the opportunity presents itself (or a pair of MC-30s or a pair of MC-60s or, yeah, even an MC-275...).

In any event as most said for ss you'd be better off w/ a mac 2100 @ 105 per side or the more room friendly 2105 w/ those meters looking at you .$100 seemed way cheap and now you'll never know how or if it even worked..
