Side surrounds with two rows of seating

I am designing a 24' x 16' 7.1 HT. I am using the AVI How To, but it does not state where would you put di/bi-pole side surround speakers with two rows of seating? Directly inline with the front row, back row, or split the difference?

Depending on the size, placement, etc.. personally I would split the difference and go bipole since you are going with a 7.1 set up.
This would probably provide better accoustic imaging IMO, but you could always play around with it.

Just imagine your two rows are one couch. -
Good question and nice size room. I have three rows of seating and my side surrounds are between the first and second row. In your case I would say even with the first row or between the two. Also depends of the seating in relationship to the room.
Please tell me your running at least a 65" tv or Front Projection..... -
why don't you devise a temporary way to put them in place, stands, or a nail in the wall, listen at different positions and report back to us what you think sounds best

IMO, I would dipole betweeen the rows. The effect should still work.

Yahtzee!!! -
I agree with ya but good di-pole speakers will have good "effect" in many places but you do not want a large gap between the frontstage or too close to the rears.

Thanks for all your comments. Yes, I do have di-pole speakers for the HT. This HT is currently under construction (no windows, fiberglass exterior grade door, staggered stud walls, icynene insulation, two rows of elevated seating, 106 screen, etc ) and I want to run the speaker wire in the walls having the wire coming out exactly where the speakers will be placed. I am using Audio Video Interiors How To design, build and calibrate your own home theater guide. It states (as do most) that the side surround speakers in a 7.1 HT should be exactly across from the main listening area. However the guide did not advise for two rows of seating.
I agree that the best way would be to temporarily mount them and adjust accordingly, but like I stated, just wanted the wire to come out of the wall precisely where the speaker will be. Sounds like splitting the difference, or closer to inline with the front row would be best.
Thanks again for your input. -
mangata, sounds like your doing HomeTheater the right way. Read and research and you may be on track or ahead of many.
That is a large room, 16 feet across - I would go much bigger on the screen. What is your equipment and projector????? -

That is why I would go bipole. With the size of room you have, IMO, you would have a rather large null zone, whereas bipole would fill the space and you could take better advantage of the rear-side imaging.
I would still experiment with the setting, but not placement. With 7.1 it's pretty much standard.
