Sub Audition Idea's?

I need to replacemy old Vello 15" (Really old).

So far I have auditioned the Paradigm PS1200, Vello CHT15, M&K (Don't know what series way out of my price range), and the polk 505.

Possibly I am looking for too much - Maybe I am too used to the distortion from my old Vello.....

The PS 1200 sounded OK - it seemed to lack authenticity when playing music and also seemed to lack the low end punch during the explosions on U-571.

The CHT15, loud but not clean - at lower volumes it seemed confident when playing music and HT, When I started to push it during the same scene (U571) it seemed to flutter an distort, unable to play anything cleanly untill I dialed the crossover back to 50hz on the plate amp. It did play the low end well but still seemed "loose" is the only way to describe it.

The M&K - while it was nice - I didn't pay much attention to it - it retailed out @ $3800.00CAD, it did sound verry nice when playing three O' clock blues (BB Kink, Clapton DVDA)

The Polk 505 - Didn't seem to compare.... nice - when I pushed it a bit it seemed to handle mid bass really well - but fell flat when it came to the really deep stuff......(no offence Polk guys)

So I am looking for Ideas on what to audition next..... Bear in mind that I live in Canada (I am looking to audition a Servo 15 soon). If there is anyone in Alberta with an SVS product that they could demo for me - I'll bring the wobbly pops.

Thanks
Steve

man sounds like you have been trying all the big boys..
the new vello's are hard to beat, my next upgrade is a sub and i am haveing a time with it because we sell definitive, kef, infinity, klipsch, sunfire, so i can get a better deal buying from my company, so i have been looking at the Klipsch RSW15
397_medium.jpg. this thing pounds in the store and sound pretty good with music too, compared to the others we sell. (one of the guys at work has this sub at home and it is like a destroyer, his neighbor has already complained a few times so he cant even turn it up, has the gain control just a bit less than a 1/4 way up..poor guy) but i still keep tossing back to the vello's and wonder if i should just pay retail

    Hi Steve,

If you give us a budget we can give you some names to consider. Paradigm and Adire Audio are good deals in Canada.
The Adire Rava is $600 CDN shipped from http://creativesound.ca/details.php?model=RavaOak They can also get the Dharman for you.

The CHT15 is about $12-1300 here but the Paradigm PW2200 retails for $1070. The 2200 will give you the impact for movies as well as being musical IMO. Glemay just bought one for around $950. The Servo15 is a beast but costs about $1800 I think.

    Steve,

Go and audition the Paradigm PW-2200 V.2, it is one incredible sub for the money, especially since you are in Canada. I don't think you will be disappointed. In Canada I don't think the Velodyne subwoofer are that great of a bargain, my opinion only. I think your best bet would be the Paradigm PW-2200, but let your ears decide.

OK - possibly a little more information....

I went back to the local A/V. I decided to spend a little more time to determine just what is is that I am looking for in a Sub. Here is what I found. The Paradigm PS1200, really seemed "boomy" and "loose". I tried different program material, Eagles, Clapton and BB King (riding with the King), Fleetwood Mac, U571. The Paradigm seemed to lack confidence - the bass notes while playing the music seemed to be muddled, not individual at any volume setting.

I "bit the Bullet" and decided to spend a little more time listening to the M&K MX150 MKII. Bear in mind that @ $2200.00 CAD it is out of my price range. It was SOLID, played tight, clean, clear low end - each note was easy to distinguish, the explosions were sharp and well defined (and Deep). I can't put my finger on it, but I did like the sound untill we pushed it a little harder..... only at the "abouve my average" listening volumes did it seem to lack the power and authority I thought it should have. Naturally they then steered me towards the MX350...... HA! @$3600.00 CAD!!!! Not a chance.......

So I think my budget will limit what I end up with in the end - tho I would like to be surprised......

Sticking to $1000.00 CAD - Might not seem like much to some but that is what I have to play with...... I am going to Edmonton to check out a few of the other HT shops and audition a few more subs...... and NO I have not ruled out DIY yet.

Thanks for the input guys - keep it comming - I have been lurking far too long.....
