I blame the city council, they never wanted the race in the first place. I doubt their collective IQ would make it to 100.

Stinks because it was one of the better races on the circuit.Rough roads, tight, tricky turns, chicanes that screwed with them.
    Fun to watch.
Oh well I'm sure they can have a Meth head cook off instead to replace it or something.
Not the town I grew up around that's for sure.

Essentially the same thing happened in San Jose. Ran for three years and was canceled. It was supposed to generate all this indirect and induced income, but basically was a financial disaster for the city and downtown businesses. As with many things in politics, it seems only the consultants who predicted what a great event it would be made any money.

Both the organizers and the city were lining their pockets and left the city to pay the deficit.

I went to the 3rd and as it turned out, final race there. It was a great venue with an excellent turn out. I planned on going the next year only to find out they canceled it, which left me scratching my head.

Good. The prolonged prep for it caused all kinds of traffic headaches, closures and detours for my father's commute,
and not just during the race itself.

Based on the linked article, the venture had hemorrhaged money.
The race had yet to make a profit in three years. Race On was the third organizer for the race. Baltimore Racing Development shuttered after failing to pay its obligations for the first race. Downforce Racing planned to run the race in 2012, but shuttered due to not meeting contract obligations with Baltimore City.

You know there are serious problems when you get 160,000 people and claim not to make a profit.

The fact is the Baltimore city council and like others are short sighted morons. You might remember how they fought the plans to develop the inner harbor area. Thank God and Willie Don they didn't get their way.

They also tried it for I think a few years at the Meadowlands and did not get the crowds that they needed for a race like that.In addition Nascar also put it out there that a track and a race could be done on Staten Islandusing puplic funds ,lol not happening. Now you look at S.F. where they have the Red Bull Air Races, the America's Cup, Super Human Triathalon, and the ever popular 4th of July fireworks which no one can ever see because of the fog always runs in ...F-1, I think that's called emminent domain when the good of the maases outweighs the few who are just tossed overboard or under the car depending which is running at the time.....

I was there in those days (indeed, my mother was working downtown in the early to mid 1970s when the Inner Harbor was nicely brick-paved, but otherwise pretty much desolate)...

Even with 160,000 in attendance, it's possible the city demands/requirements were such that making a profit would be a fat chance. That's how they discourage venues they don't like without coming out and saying so. It's a PC way of saying shove it.

Hell, the only reason I knew when the race was the past two years was seeing the signs on the Beltway warning about traffic interruptions from it. A real shame.

They should bring NASCAR to Baltimore.
NASCAR is becoming more like F1 all the time. F1 cars are great but the ruling power needs some work. What I mean is they should be more like the 1980's NASCAR instead of a bunch of old ladies bitching about this or that. Just let them race. Now NASCAR, which now I seldom watch, has become like F1 trying to sanitize the races.

Back in the late '70's/early '80's they actually were trying to build a Nascar track at the site of the old Dorsey speedway south of Baltimore.
Nascar has certainly fizzled now but i bet MD sure wishes it did build it back then and enjoyed that 20 years of boom.

Exactly. Not just my father but all the people in front of him and behind every day on those routes
for months and months and the surrounding businesses were inconvenienced for the questionable
good of some racing fans and some money-hungry promoters.

Months and months? Just for the good of race fans and promoters? You don't know what you're talking about. An event like that puts Baltimore in the national spot light, which in turn draws future visitors, not just race fans, which in turn means more money for businesses and the city.
