I have done some research and looked at the various threads here at CP. I have the free version of MM right now and just started ripping some cd's to FLAC.

First question. I am currently ripping with the following settings...
Compression Level - 0
Rip Type - Secure read (takes extra time)

I have not dug any deeper.

Am I getting the best audio quality?

Is it this simple or do I need to dig deeper and put more work in?

    Compression level has to do with how large the final file is, nothing at all to do with sound quality. I always pick level 8 as it makes the smallest files, but does take a few minutes longer to rip. Secure mode is what you want for best ripping.

    I would raise the compression level or you can leave it as is.

    That is exactly how I do my own, using mm and the compression all the way up. I also load them on a spare hard drive thats connected to my receiver, it works very well

    I've left it compression level 6 in secure mode. So far I can't complain.

    Thanks folks. I always think of compression as a negative buzzword which is why I turned it all the way down. But what you're saying makes sense.

    I'm also looking to put them on a spare hard drive as a backup in case something happens to the laptop. What size spare hard drive do you use snake1?

    500gb right now, I just started this myself not long ago so that may seem small to some. The HD will need to be formatted to use with an avr. If you need some help with it just let me know.

    How do you get MediaMonkey to save your rips in the directory structure/format you choose? Mine keeps defaulting back to a generic setup. For example, My music HDD looks like this:

    D:\Music
    \Artist - Album\Track# - Filename

    so it appears: D:\Music\Journey - Infinity\01 - Lights.flac

    When I try to create this structure, MM doesn't save it

    Does the HDD go in one of those HDD to USB cases? And then to the AVR via USB?

    The HDD is an external/powered WD connected to my laptop via USB.

    I was thinking of getting one of those Western Digital My Book Live personal cloud devices. Does anyone have any experience streaming high resolution music out of one of those? I guess it's similar to a NAS?
