I found this two at a Goodwill

Kenwood KA-400 $19.95

Tested at least turn's on. But it needs to be re-cap. Now the questions is this worth recapping. That is something I can do for sure.

Sony PS-LX510

Turns on and seems to be okay. Need more testing and cleaning. $14.95

Here are some pics....

The stuff that leaked out of the electrolytics is corrosive and may have done significant damage to the circuit board. The replacement caps are probably not too expensive, but you won't know what is needs to be repaired until you get in there.

Looks like the amp is around 30+ years old, was 45 wpc. Unless you want to practice on this, it's not worth it IMO.

That Kenwood is sort of at the end of the silver face period. Probably early '80s. And hence of lower build quality than the heyday.

If you find something like a KA-7300, KA-8100, or KA-9100 (all twin power units with the lowest model having 65 watts x 2 RMS). It might be worth having it refurbed. Those were some nice integrateds with a nice clean "powerful" sound! There are some others in there as well with different model numbers (you can check over at AK with the Kenwood boys).

I have a KA-7300, twin power supply, 4 x 10,000mf storage caps, and a nice neutral to a slightly warm sound. The problem, I think my relays are going? But I had my tech check it out and he says it's fine. However, when "I" run it, it starts up quickly the first time, then the next day it takes 2 to 3 minutes to kick in, then 5-10, then 20 minutes, then eventually it doesn't kick in at all. At which point I stop using it and put it aside. Then I take it to my tech and low and behold it starts up immediately when he plugs it in? He keeps it for a few weeks and starts it up and turns it off, NO PROBLEM. I get it back, SAME PROBLEM? WTF?

I'm now thinking about just boxing it up and sending it to the expert Kenwood man on AK because it is worth saving.

cnh- I've got a Kenny 7300 as well and it is a beautiful piece; but, alas mine has issues as well. I have some cracks and pops out the left side after it gets warm and think the output transistors may be bad. Wish I had the skills to troubleshoot and fix myself.

To the OP- as others stated, the receiver is nothing special so unless you just want to practice, it's not worth the effort. The turntable though is a decent starter table for someone. I'd throw a nice Grado black pmount cartridge on it if it works ok and enjoy for awhile.

Your lucky, both the East Brunswick store on Rt18 s/b and the Aberdeen Rt 35 n/b in central Jersey both have been phasing out their electronic selections.I really cleaned up at the Aberdeen store for LPs and now almost nothing where they used to have tubs filled w/ LPs some w/ the shrink wrap still on them and now w/nothing but some X-mas stuff and Engleburt or Tom Jones, not for me.

Well the Kenwood went back to the Goodwill I still get a credit for some later finds. The Sony needs a new belt for the tonearm but that is only $4.00 I will get that one by the end of the week. It has an Audio Thecnica AT320 cartridge so I will try it after I replace the belt.

    Cheers

hmmm - I would've given the Kenwood the benefit of the doubt. Yes it is a later product; but even much of the early-mid 1980s Kenwood hardware was very respectable massmarket stuff.

Yes I did thought about it, but a lot of the caps were leaking baldly. Well tomorrow I have to do some work in SF and I does not hurt checking the Goodwill's there just for fun if I get a chance.

I've all but given up on GW/SA in hopes of finding something worth having. Probably the last dozen times I have been in those stores looking all I find is VCR's and clock radio's. The last time I "thought" I found something was last year. Walked up to a small pair of speakers that were EPI's. Popped the grills....tweeters were replaced with piezo's and they had Pyle car woofers! lol
    --Gary--
Onkyo Integra M504, Bottlehead Foreplay III, Denon SACD, Thiel CS2.3, NHT VT-2, VT-3 and Evolution T6, Infinity RSIIIa, SDA1C and a few dozen other speakers around the house I change in and out.

Yes most of the time that all there is. I had some luck here in the Bay Area have found ADS L780/2 and L690, B&K AVP3090. I saw a pair of Dali 1001 speaker but price was too much and also Human 81 speakers but they need it a lot of work.

    Cheers
