Garage Sale Find - Tubes!

Just picked these two vacuum tube radios at a garage sale for $10. Can anybody tell me anything about them? The Zenith has 3 tubes and says it's 30 watts, but it is missing it's speaker. Any ideas what I can put in it as far as a speaker? The other is a Sparton. I can see one of the tubes from the back but can't tell how many it has. The Sparton is made of wood and is pretty heavy, whereas the Zenith is plastic and light. The Sparton works great. The Zenith, I can watch the tube glow so I think all it needs is a speaker. At any rate, I think they're neat!

very cool design on the zenith. The bakelite sparton may be more collectible to some but non original speaker will hurt it. For funnsies, just get a full range 4-5" driver from parts express and see how it does.

The Sparton is all original. It's the Zenith that's missing it's speaker. I guess I'll need to measure the size and depth of the driver I need but thanks for the suggestion of Parts Express, I'll check the place out.

Lots of options for tiny speakers at this website, thanks! Interesting little 3" subwoofer that plays down to 50Hz, very neat. I don't expect the Zenith is worth much money, it's plastic and cheap feeling, though I could be wrong. If it's not worth anything I will do something cool with it...

Very cool... Get them working and clean them up... make sure you check/replace the power cords as sometimes the old ones are dangerously deteriorated. I have a couple of collectibles from the 30's, and have been trying to find a classic zenith... Here are my American Bosch, and Detrola. They are from an era when people watched the radio

Those are awesome! I watch the Andy Griffith show almost every night and Aunt Bee "watches" her soap operas on the radio. Makes you wonder, with the age of these radios, what they have been through and where. I really like yours Mikey.

They sure are fun to "watch". Back when these were everyday technology staples, people got all of their information from these. You should be able to find a speaker for the zenith. I don't follow the bakelite ones much, but look at what this one is worth, and he will get at least 5hunge for it: The ones with the racetrack dial are hot

Dang, that's some money for an old little radio. Much cooler than the Zenith I just got, it's wood instead of plastic.

I keep scouring the flea market looking for treasure. The sparton's can be worth something... I would never sell mine... But I would like to find a Zenith like the one on ebay.

Maybe you're right. They sure look cool sitting on the shelf and it's not like they're going to get any less valuable.

Mikey those radios are real beauties! At times, I have considered investing in a real nice "floor standing" vintage radio. Since I am not bat **** crazy about having everything original, one that was refinished would look awesome and could sound good too. It certainly would be a conversation piece. These old radios are great!

Nightfall those are a great find from garage sale deals. I had a old Zenith. It wasnt much but i semi restored the wood cabinet. It was tube. It had am-fm so i was thinking around 1958-61 era. Not as old as those :) Those are cool & you may have staggered apon a small pot of gold to the right person. Enjoy them. You dont see many of them anymore.
