Oppo 103

I took a Oppo 103 home from my office and gave it a spin.
First items I tested were two 24/96 FLAC albums.
First album was "The 2nd Law" by Muse and "Speaking In Tongues " by Talking Heads.
They both sounded amazing. Bass was solid and deep, the highs were clean with no distortion.
The entire Talking Heads album just popped out of the speakers, it was fun to listen to. Even if you hate the Talking Heads you would have fun listening to it.
Muse album sounded great too. I normally use my laptop to play my FLACs through a DAC by HRT (music streamer II). the MSII is a good piece of hardware but this Oppo sounded much better.

CDs were Ok. Not much different from my Pioneer BD320. The Oppo was bit more forward sounding ( I like that).
For CDs I played back Dark Side Of The Moon side by side with the Pioneer BD320.
Also tested it with Youngblood Brass Band.

Overall I think its a great player.
The user interface feels good too. I like that the player was able to display the Artwork for the FLAC files.

Used RCA connections out of the Oppo to my Rotel. Nothing fancy just solid core well shielded Liberty Interflex cable.
The EQ in my Sig is what I used to test the oppo103 on.

My background with CD players range from Linn, Rotel, Mcintosh, krell, Bryston, Marantz, Sony, and a whole bunch more. For 500 bucks this unit is a no-brainer for anyone in the market for an awesome media player.

As soon as I get some funds, an Oppo 103 is the first thing on the list of must haves! I have been interested in doing a side by side comparison with vinyl.

I found the build quality also impressive, just pick up the remote which is a presursor to what you'll find with the machine itself. And customer service, I haven't had an email issue/question that wasn't responded to within the hour, faster if you want to pick up the phone. It feels great to buy something with the craftsmanship level of this product in a day of throw away electronics.

Oppo has a couple of great players on their hands with the 103 and 105, that's for sure. The 105 is a big jump up in performance, but is in price as well so that's expected.

The thing I love about companies like Oppo is the singular focus.
It allows them to do one thing exceptionally well and without any inhibitions.
Companies that get their hands into too many pies tend to do things "good enough" while Oppo and similar companies push the limits of what can be done within certain price points.
Wish there were more companies like that.

And yes...I do in fact love my 103...a lot.

Then you should get the 105, which is optimized for two channel analog. The 103 and 105 are essentially the same for video.

I love my 103. It took the place of the Marantz 5007 and I'm very glad I swapped.

90% of what I watch/listen to is on the Oppo or my Roku 3.

I do have the pioneer BDP-62FD and may yet consider the Oppe 103 with this much vote for it.
Would it be worth going from the pioneer to the Oppo?

Not if you're just playing CDs. If you want to use FLAC files from a USB I think its worth the 500 bucks. But the Pioneers sound just as good. I also tested it against my Elite BDP94FD. Cant tell a difference.

I saw something today that I found interesting about the Oppo 103. I was looking at a inexpensive 4K tv on Amazon made by Seiki Digital. Someone had written in saying that this tv plays nice with the Oppo 103 when upconverting a signal like DTV. Anyone else have more info on this?

Am I going to notice a difference in picture quality between my PS3 and an Oppo 103. Playing Blu Rays? Thanks. D

The 103 does upconvert nicely if you run your HD cable/satellite box through it to your display.

If you're running HDMI for both the Oppo and PS3 I'd say blu-ray picture quality improvement will be negligible.
