We tend to lose power in major storms. For the house I have a gas powered generator that will keep the well water running and give us heat in the winter. Was thinking one of those hand crank radios that get NOAA would be a good idea along with something to charge the numerous batteries I have. Any first hand experiences with these?
Yep, my name really is Bob.

Are you talking about one of those hand crank generators the military used?

I bought one of these about a month ago to use during our camping trip in Aspen. I started out excited as I thought it would be great to get a for extra % points on my phone when I needed it and listen to the radio around the fire... Big mistake. Everything "worked" but, it didn't hold a charge worth anything. You crank the dial for two minute intervals throughout the day and leave it charging in the sun, and in the evening I would get about 7/8 minutes use out of it. Needless to say it went straight back to amazon.

We have a small Grundig brand hand crank multi-band radio w/ built in flashlight. The crank works really well and can last up 20 minutes or so. Then just crank it again.

It came in handy when we had that massive Southern California blackout. The radio kept us informed on what was going on.

I've had two Eton's and both have broke within two or three camping trips. I won't buy another.
