as seen from a somewhat unlikely source (although the Urquelle, so to speak, isn't so surprising).

I built my first bucket sub circa 1992.
In 1993, I built a full on, self contained bucket "boombox". It spent a lot of time on the beach with us.

I like the bucket sub! That Peerless SLS 830667 is very nice for midbass but never tried it as a sub. No bucket though...would make a small box or pick up a .6 cu ft flat pack from DIY Sound Group.

It's too bad that my wife wouldn't approve of a bucket sub in our main living area. Unless.....are their boutique bucket stores?

    I love it!

I'm very intrigued by both the sub and the small full-range driver.

Has anyone tried building a single-driver monitor system? For a while now I've been looking at the 8" Dayton fullrange speaker at Parts-Express and thinking about building a not-so-expensive system. Maybe I don't need to even spend that much on the 8" fullrange?

Well... no, not for "real" monitor use - but I enjoy the heck out of a pair of (more or less) "full range" Fostex (FE-207E, 200 mm)drivers in very simple BR cabinets... "great for tube amps" :-)

FWIW, I think that 8" (200 mm) is a sweet spot in terms of size for "full range" (extended range) drivers - big enough to move a little air, with the potential for low-enough Fs to have some LF reach... and small enough to provide the opportunity (typically, but not always, with a "whizzer" cone) to provide reasonably extended HF response and still not be too "beamy" (as in "beamy up, Scotty").

I cannot vouch for the current PE drivers (have yet to hear 'em), but they look nice and I'd certainly expect good things from them. You're talking about the ones with the copper phase plugs, yes?

My first stereo speakers I built myself in high school, a very long time ago, using an 8" full range driver and they didn't sound half bad.

Yes, I was referring to the ones with the copper phase plugs. Look pretty cool!

The room was pretty empty then (last winter)... it's full of junk now :-P

The PartsExpress drivers certainly look well designed and well made... little too 'spensive to just buy a pair to play with, unfortunately.
