SDA SRS 1.2TLs!

Well, life didn't exactly 'drop' them, but the biggest problem was going to get them. I had to go on a 1300 mile round-trip, whirlwind trek. They aren't cosmetically in perfect shape, will need new grill cloth, and there are a few scratches in the wood I'm going to need to address. Also, sounds like maybe one MW is bad. Could be wrong, but it sounds like the one with a crushed dome. I think I have at least one 6503 around here somewhere.

At the price I paid, even adding my fuel costs and time, I couldn't pass 'em up even if they need a little work. Now I need to remember where I stashed that MW6503...

Yeah, yeah, I know: SRSs and 1.2TLs in the same home...tsk tsk.:rolleyes::twisted:

One more project to add to my lengthening list, I suppose.

If you have the room you will never regret it.

Plus. Think of all the fun you will have modding them.

But that is a whole lot of driving.

Much in the fashion of my wife when she jumped in my butt over buying the pair...LOL Seriously though, I'm thinking I may have a tweeter "off" too. Doesn't "look" damaged, but looks discolored, but more importantly, I hear a little static - checked for loose connections, none evident. Traded it around to see if my problem moved or the problem stayed put. Static moved with the tweeter. Was in position 3, sounded actually worse in 4. Thoughts? Found it odd that it was discolored, almost a golden hue rather than silver. Smoked?

I have some SL2000s for spares for the SRSs, but no SL3000s. Did find that 6503 though... Seems to have cleaned-up that issue just fine.

I won't walk away from a good deal on something I was looking for very often, though I saw a set of SRTs on craigslist(I think Waco, TX) the other day that were interesting, but too steep for me.

I've thought about little else. More business for VR3, ultimately.

I'm still thinking about "deployment options.". May well be overkill for me, but hey, never let it be said I wouldn't go the distance.

It's not discolored. Due to the manufacturing process, the SL3000 tweeter can be silver toned, gold toned or a black-silver tone.

Thanks. Maybe it was from a different batch? I don't know, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. Still, it is the one producing the static, so something about it isn't right, irrespective of color. Coincidence, I suppose. Thanks for the info, F1nut!

Polk usually matched the colors for each set from what I've seen over the years. It's likely the one was a replacement. That said, the newer RD0198-1 replacement tweeters from Polk are much better than the SL3000's. Besides that, by this point in time the ferro fluid in the SL3000's has turned to sludge and is no longer doing its job, so you would do well to replace all of them.

F-1that's very interesting about the tweeter colors ,I thought they were called siverdomes for a reason and mine do have a goldish tinge to them .Whether that's the way they came or discolored over time really doesn't matter they will be changed once Polk gets them restocked in 3/4 months.Yes RDOs- 194s and then the minimal x-over mod ........

I believe they were called "silver coil dome" referring to the use of silver coated wire used in the voice coil, the dome material being a laminate of metal deposits can have a slightly different tint from each other.

Lew, we're talking about SL3000's, not the SL2000's you have. The dome material on your SL2000's is polyamide, which started out life as a fairly colorless material. Over time they tend to yellow.

    For the sake of clarity,

The SL2000 was called a "silver coil dome" referring to the use of silver coated wire used in the voice coil as Ken points out.

The SL3000 was the tweeter with the dome material made from a laminate of metal deposits and hence the moniker TL, which stands for tri-laminate

Those are the BIG BOYS. Have fun. 1300 miles round trip? That's pretty impressive. I believe my SDAs came a shorter distance from a Polkie in NC to Pa (via the Ligthtman1 express) then Pa to Maine via cnh delivery. We got a local Polk get together in Pa into the mix where the speakers were handed off from ligthman1 to me.

What's that? 1000+miles? You beat me as I only made the trip between Pa. and Maine both ways. But I have family in the area so it was a vacation as well. But that was years ago and I was younger and naive...or was I?

For the luv of SDAs! Can you believe what "we" do?

    cnh,

Wife thinks I'm nuts. Maybe she's right, but as I tell her, she picked me...LOL It wasn't bad. Left here Friday around noon, got there around 11p. Picked up the goods at 7:30am, left by 8, and was back in time for supper. The ol' F350 rolls along just fine on the highway, but the price of diesel added about $300 to the cost. (Which still leaves them a good price, no matter what.)
