Post cap is inside the speaker cabinet. Can't get it out.

Hi all,

I just got my new RTiA5's the other day and was taking off the post caps to remove the center piece so I could use my banana clips with the speakers. Well, when I was taking one of them off, it fell and apparently hit the metal cone type thing on the back of the speaker and went right inside. I cannot get the dang thing out of the speaker! I'm using banana clips so I don't need it for functionality, but it annoys the crap out of me that thing is in the speaker and could possibly rattle if the speaker has a decent amount of vibration. Does anyone have any idea how I might get that thing out of there?

Not 100% sure on the A5's but looking at my A7's I would take the front port off and I think you would be able to get in there and remove it. Don't you hate it when something simple like this goes haywire and frustrates the crap out of you?

The ports do not come out all the way.

Hello and welcome to Club Polk, Jestered. I seriously doubt that a plastic piece that size would even have any affect on the sound reproduction at all, no matter the frequency that the speakers try to produce. I wouldn't worry about it personally.....but if you must.....you may want to remove one of the drivers and try to shake it out of the opening. I wish I was more familiar with your speakers to offer you more definitive information on removing it. If the speaker hasn't moved since it fell into the port, simply power the system down, remove the speaker wires and lean the speaker toward the back and hopefully the piece will simply fall right back out of the port itself.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

My initial thought was to take the bottom port off and get to it that way, but I don't have the right size tool to get it off. So, I thought I would take the part off the back that has all the posts, but the wiring to that piece has no slack and I couldn't get it out of the way enough to get anything in there. It at least let me be able to get a flashlight and have a look inside. I noticed that the bottom port is glued to something else in the cabinet, so even if I had the right tool, it isn't going to come out anyway.

I thought about taking off one of the speakers, but again, I need to right tool and don't have one right now. While I was able to look inside the cabinet from the back I noticed that there's about a 2 inch wide channel that runs around the inside of the speaker cabinet. The channel is on the sides of the speaker cabinets right in the center and runs all the way around. I was never able to actually see the post cap when I was looking in there and assume that it's down in that channel. That channel is what makes it impossible to simple get it to fall out of the back port that it went in through. I spent about an hour trying to shake it out of there and there's something that's preventing it from simply falling out. That was a workout!

The big problem is that I was never able to get the cap up out of that channel and into the large hollow area behind the speakers. I was hoping I could do that, and be able to see it through the back (when I had the port plate slightly removed), and then I would simply get the tool to remove one of the speakers and reach in there and grab it. That's still my only hope I believe, but so far I've had no luck.

I have listened to it for about a day now with that piece in there and never heard it rattle, so that's not the issue. The problem is that I have these nice brand new speakers, and even though no one else will ever know, I know it's in there and it is driving me freaking crazy!

The only way you MIGHT get it out is to remove the drivers, then try to shake it out. I say might because as you noticed there are a good number of chambers inside the cabinet that impede just reaching in to grab something.

Let me put it to you this way......I would equate that small piece of plastic to a feather within the speaker. No discernible difference. Just be sure to keep them upright and not get it lodged in between the driver/magnet assembly and you are golden for the life of the speaker. That is the only thing that could impede the performance of the speaker itself with it being in there.

This JUST happened to me also with my RTI-A7. I can't understand how the stars must have been perfectly aligned for this to happen but it did.

Have you had any luck getting yours out?? I'm new at this and don't want to just start taking things apart without knowing what i'm doing

Sorry for the late response! I was not able to get the cap out of my speaker. I tried and tried and could not get it out of that groove to be able to attempt to reach in and grab it. I can say that it has never rattled or anything like that, so I wouldn't worry about it causing any issues with the sound, but it's still annoying knowing that it's in there somewhere. Looking at the cone back there it looks like it would be extremely difficult for it to hit the right spot to force it inside the cabinet, but obviously it does happen. If you got yours out I'd love to know how you did it.
