recommend a multi-room receiver with these things?

I've got 3 zones - living room (5.1), some speakers on the deck, and then 2 in the house (one in the den and another upstairs). That's really just 3 zones: living room, outside, and the 'rest of the house'.

I really do not need to play different things on each. If anything, I'd just like to play the same music either just in the living room, or living room + outside, or living room + whole house. It's possible I'd want all 3 on as well.

I've not found any A,B,C speaker switching receivers, so would this be better suited for a 'zone' system?

Any other way to achieve this? Recommend a good AV-switching receiver with 3 zones?

What receiver are you currently running>? Most modern receivers - except the really entry level ones - can run a second and sometimes a third zone, powered or unpowered, and usually you can play either the same material or different material on that second zone (sometimes called a multi-room feature). For instance, the pioneer in my sig does this. I would highly recommend an external multi-zone amp for your setup. This is the one I have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sonance-Sonamp-260x3-Stereo-Amplifier-/360719866277?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item53fc9459a5. That one isn't real pretty, but if its tucked away in a cabinet who cares? So you would have 2 zones (but which I mean two potential sources) and your deck, den, and upstairs can each be switched on or off, any combination you like. But they would only be able to play the same thing. I have had my sonance for almost 3 years, its on at least several times a week, and I have never had a problem. And it sounds pretty good too - plenty of power for most in-ceiling and deck type speakers. Good luck!

I've got a 2-zone AV switching Yamaha now. The extra multi-zone amp sounds like a good option. I could keep my receiver I have now and just use the pre-amp out. I will always be playing the same music on all zones. thanks

can you or anyone recommend a speaker switching amp? I see a lot of speaker selector components, but they are not amped. I need one with integrated amp that can also switch speakers. thanks

Speaker switching amp stuff? Go to Niles and look around http://www.nilesaudio.com/

But why get into a messy outdated system? Buy three Sonos Connect Amps.
Three Sonos players with built in amps. You can group all three zones into one or play them as three different zones all from the flip of a switch on your PC,tablet, iphone, or ipad.
If you have music on a network drive, Media player, or PC you can point the sonos at it using its PC app. It will stream CD quality music.

But I hate streaming music, well Sonos has a audio input. You connect 1 source to any of the three sonos amps and you can use it on any zone. The more sono amps you get the more sources you can add. So in your case Three.

The amp is good too. I power in-wall B&W and Sonance speakers with them all the time. 55w X2 + they have a Sub out connection.

I cant say how awesome Sonos is for multi zone audio systems. Anything else is a waste of time and money.
Also want to point out that you only need ONE unit connected to the internet Via Enet cable. the others will run on Zwave. If your audio location (A/V main) doesn't have Enet you can connect a Zone Bridge to your network and that will let your Sonos amps connect to the network.
