Replacement Monitor 10 woofers

So I have a set of Monitor 10 speakers that my dad bought in the 80s, theyve been sitting around my house unused for as long as I can remember. Recently I asked my dad and checked them out myself, and it turns out they have a bad mid range driver on one of the speakers. I called up Polk and checked around online and found out that the driver for them is the MW-6500, which apparently is well known for having magnet lock up issues exactly like the one in my home has. When I talked to Polk technical support the man at the other end told me to check parts express, but doing so turned up nothing, nor has checking in several other places.
Does anyone know of a place I can get some new MW-6500s or a suitable replacement? I would very much like to hear these speakers, as I understand they have a highly regarded model of tweeter, as well as a good reputation.

Hi, Aaron.
I'm parting out my beloved Monitor 10B's, c. 1988, after the cabinets sustained substantial water damage.
All the drivers are fine. I have MW-6501 and MW-6503's. I don't know for sure if they're compatible with the 6500's but if you can confirm that they are you can have them gratis plus shipping from 61821.
Let me know how you'd like to proceed.“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

^^^^^^Call Polk Customer service and ask for Helen or Kim both know the older drivers very well. I cannot believe they(Polk CS) would EVER direct you to parts express for drivers....6500's do show up un eBay but you also take a chance of getting a bad driver(locked-up) from the rough shipping if the seller does nothing to help keep the magnet from shifting before packing the driver. -
Pit, what would I need to do as I pack the driver for shipping to ensure it arrives safely?“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

Thank you for the offer but, and when I say this I mean no offence at all towards you, I think I would prefer to buy some new drivers directly from a particular source like Amazon or something. Im aware this may be unlikely, but Id still like to, mainly because any drivers I get from a source like that will most likely have been made much more recently than the originals. Im thinking if I can get new drivers that they may not have this magnet lock issue like the originals, but I may be completely wrong.
Somewhat related question, can someone tell me what type of fuse I need for these speakers, and if the fuse is actually even necessary? -
The new drivers are made in China...afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

the newer driver Polk has should not ever have that problem. That said I have bought many many drivers from Ebay with not one problem. Lucky? yes. But I have asked some of the sellers to tape the snot out of the magnet area, pack tightly and well cushioned in a small box to keep movement to a minimum.
Mention to Polk CS that you are a polk forum member get a small discount for the new driver 48.00 each if i remember right.
The fuse is for the tweeter section most call for 1amp fast-blo but i have also seen some for .75 fast-blo I believe your should be 1.0 amp fast-blo -
JB Weld or similar and they will not shift.Pit, what would I need to do as I pack the driver for shipping to ensure it arrives safely?
correct JB weld around the magnet will help a bunch. Some have also used 2 part putty epoxy with good results. -

When I talked to CS earlier today I was told that they couldnt sell me any MW-6500, nor did he give me any alternatives. As I mentioned in the OP he just directed me for PartsExpress for some reason, which was no help at all.
To be honest I think I would buy 4 of the drivers, simply because there is no doubt in my mind that a driver made in 2012 or so would sound different than a driver made in 1985. -
refer to post #4 call and ask for Helen or Kim Jasper you were given bad advise for parts express.
New driver will sound the same I've used both and could not tell a difference. but it's your money and your speakers. We have all been through it at one time or another.
