HDMI board's - cost to replace

It appears the HDMI board in my Integra DTR 5.9 has gone out. This morning it simply wouldnt work. Here is what I did in case I missed something

1. Re-checked ALL hdmi cables to ensure they were seated
2. Unplugged and re-plugged them just in case
3. Tried all HDMI sources independently one by one to ensure one port wasnt bad
4. Plugged the source directly to the TV - got picture but no sound (of course)
5. Factory reset on unit
6. did I miss something?

The unit is a bit warm above the HDMI board, but nothing I would be very worried about personally. Looking at it I cant see anything leaking cap wise or whatever.

I know the HDMI is bad because the unit still turns on, and for right now I have HDMI to the TV 2 of my sources (Xbox 360, DVR) and optical going from my TV to the Integra, and I have sound. I simply cant get picture.

I dont have enough cables to test if component is working, or s-video.

So my question is has anyone replaced their HDMI board when out of warranty and if so what was the associated cost? This HDMI board has already had the caps replaced as it was one of the fated units that had the cheap caps like the Onkyo TX-SRX06 models.

Also any other suggestions to try would be appreciated.

P.S. part of me wants to be able to fix it (as its hopefully going to be cheap), but part of my wants to drop on a new Pioneer SC model, but I know we dont have the cash. If its super expensive I may end up with a Onkyo 709 which has better EQ but I really want to push for the SC-68, or one of the last years models so I can run my LSi center and surrounds off the unit, and my LSi 15's off a dedicated amp.

Anyway cost to replace the HDMI board? More expensive than a Accessories4less 709? Stick to my guns with how it is now and fight for the SC model?

Thoughts from the masses welcomed

I have an older Onkyo TX-SR705 with a bad HDMI board. The info I have dug up is there are several (not really sure how many) 100 microfarad 4 volt capacitors on the board and these are the ones that go bad. The recommendation that I have read is to replace these with 100 microfarad 16 volt hi-temp capacitors. This is supposed to fix this problem. Good luck and if you do get it fixed I would love to hear about it.

I wouldn't let my hard earned money anywhere near an Onkyo/Integra these days, which is really unfortunate. You've already had the unit "fixed" once, I'd go ahead and replace it with something a bit more reliable.

I will probably be calling the shop that did the work last time to see what they did, but again this was in for a similar issue 3 years ago give or take so they may have already replaced those once in which case the actual HDMI board itself may be bad.

Well since the fix its been 3 years. Unit so far has been in use everyday for 6 years. I may look at the cost to fix it again just to see as it appears the NR709 is no longer carried by accessories4less, so I would be looking at ~500-600 for the 809. At that price it just makes more sense to look at the Pioneer SC-65 which is about 1100 bucks.... or maybe even the 67 which is ~1400.

God I hope its an easy fix.

In other news my harmony one remote account wont work with the two remotes I have, so I have had to spend the last hour totally reprogramming the one downstairs to be able to make it work with how things are now. This day just kinda sucks.....

My Harmony One needs reprogrammed but I am working around it. Waiting for some crappy weather and a day when nothing is going on and I can spend some time getting it sorted out. Kind of a PITA but when it's done I love the way it works.

Yeah its just annoying since it was setup with all custom screens for each input and worked great, I just needed to modify what input the TV was on, and what input the Integra was on and I would be done. Now instead I have to re-set it all up, this time under my wife's email address so I dont run into this.

You would think they would have the software setup to allow you to have one account with multiple remotes, rather than having to have a one to one ratio.

Sorry you are having a crappy day. If the fix for the Integra is expensive and you want something to get you by for awhile, I'd be willing to give you a good price on my Onkyo 706. I know it's not as nice, just a band aid with HDMI for temporary fix and give you time to save and ask Santa for the Pioneer.

Thanks for the offer Travis. I will let ya know, but at this point it may be easier to just keep it all setup like I have it now as it is as long as the optical doenst go on the unit.

Either way it potentially forces a discussion on a new unit and I am going to argue to spending a lot now so its not just an incremental small step that I end up not happy with in a few months, but a large step that keep us relevant for another 5 years or so (or at least me content).

If I go with Pioneer I will be very interested in how the EQ works, same with a newer Onkyo (though I am tempted to steer clear of them). The differences in how they work is very interesting.

And at the 1k pricepoint while Anthem is there, I just dont think ARC is enough for me to justify since they still have the same amount of HDMI's and nothing special besides that to add.

For HT its about taming my room and also powering my LSi's. The Pioneer is the only AVR I know that can combine those two attributes. Any other brand still requires me to use my Carver 5 channel which isnt a huge problem, but again I want to consolidate as I can.

That and all the talk of MCACC makes me curious.

Is it the inputs or outputs on the board that are bad, or both? Do the AVR menus work on the tv?

Don't get audio or sound via HDMI. No menu overlay either.

Optical works, I can see the menus via the LCD on the menu.

I even was able to re calibrate Audyssey.

If I had the ability to test composite I would but I don't have long enough cords.

You could always do a mass replacement of all suspicious capacitors and see if that fixes the issue. I've read different things but one person in particular who has fixed hundreds of these Onkyos swears that replacing all capacitors rated 4V 85* with 35V 105* is a good start to solving all issues. My friendly neighborhood audio dealer also has a fairly large stack of non-working Integra receivers and pre/pros. He's replaced them all with Arcam receivers, and swears that they can't be beat in the $1k price point.

Not worth fixing if you ask me, may be the garage receiver if you decide to move on.

Even going to a Pioneer SC receiver, I'd stop short of running a full LSI system with just that receiver. I know, consolidation and all that but if that's the long term game plan you should maybe look into easier speakers to drive.

To start with I would be running the 15's off the Carver AV-705x and eventually I would be running the 15's off my Carver M1.0t when its finally fixed, but had planned on doing all surrounds and my center off the Pioneer. I have discussed this with Mantis a bunch of times and he said it shouldn't be too big a problem.

I realize the LSi's are not the easiest to drive, but I still enjoy them and dont plan on moving to anyone else HT wise because at this point I cant sell the LSi's I have and replace them with a better system without spending a LOT more money. Worst case I still keep the 5 channel Carver and drive some of the remaining speakers from it.

Regardless it was mentioned to me that they do on occasion offer a one time out of warranty fix for some of their products. I assume this arose as a result of the fact they got a blemish on their reputation for their HDMI boards failing. I will be looking into this to see if its something I would qualify for, and if so I will do that. However once it gets back it probably wont last long before being replaced.

Lol I figured it was the hangover from all the wine and beer with the Canucks .

Yeah I know the 15s kinda need their own amp for sure but thought the LSiC and LSi f/xs could go off the AVR.

That's all the channels I have for now but if I were to add more in the future like I plan too I would start to add some additional amps if needed.

It's a long shot, but you might want to disconnect all HDMI cables, unplug it and let it sit over night.

Most shops when they replace the caps use the same value caps and you end up with the same issue. You need to up the voltage on the caps and use high temp ones. When that was done I have not seen any issues. A friend of mine opened his unit when it was new and swapped the caps with better ones and not one issue.

Caps hate heat but if you can work on surface mounted parts the caps are a few dollars. Good luck.

I just sent my TX-NR1007 off for repair for the HDMI board, and Onkyo is covering a one-time out-of-warranty repair because it's a known problem (and they supposedly have newer boards that fix the issue). Just call them and mention that you've seen where it's a known problem on several A/V forums and they should do the same for you.

If not... May I interest you in a 1007 that should be back from repair soon? I couldn't wait for the repair, so I replaced it with a shiny new 3010.

Thought I would bring this thread to its conclusion.

I got in touch with Onkyo about my issues and asked about the possibility of a one time out of warranty repair on the item given the fact all the models from this year were prone to HDMI board failures. As I had the original sales receipt from a authorized dealer, they just emailed me today and are going to fix it at no cost to me. Its amazing how that works when you buy from the right people and keep proof of it . I also appreciate them covering the repair in spite of the fact it obviously out of warranty which I did not attempt to hide.

Best of all the repair shop is local so I don't need to worry about the monkeys at the normal shipping companies as well as should be able to get it back quicker once its done.

So now to move my Sunfire TGP-II downstairs while the Integra is in the shop.

Regardless I am starting a Pio Elite fund. Hopefully in the next year or so I will have one.

Yup, I dont have the scratch to buy anything new now so if it wasnt covered I would just be doing HDMI straight to the TV to the Integra via optical.

While I like the feature set of the newer Onkyo's (say NR709) I think I am going to try Pioneer instead. Their MCACC is getting lots of good reviews from folks running MUCH better gear than me. Plus the Pio's let me run some of my LSi speakers off of them without the need for a dedicated amp. So I can amp my 15's and run my center and surrounds off the AVR. And if I add Heights (which I want to do) I can run those off it as well.

Anyway glad your Onkyo sold and hope your enjoying your new one.

That's the best news I've heard all day Endersshadow, glad to hear this! I can understand your looking at the Pio Elite SC's, they really sound like an all around solid AVR, and I have never__ heard anything negative about the MCACC system.

Glad they did the repair for you , but...Eff Onkyo! I kindly asked them to do a courtesy 'one time' out of warranty repair on the HDMI board of my SR805 (which was barely past the extended warranty that I bought from Onkyo) and they said no! Why? Because it was not a 'known issue' with the 805 model. 8ull$hit! I would still be happily using my 805 if it wasn't for the HDMI problems. Oh well. Onkyo lost me as a customer over that.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Yeah, I dont know if any of that had to do with the fact it was an "Integra" over an "Onkyo". I can tell you there is a decent price difference between the two lines.

Regardless hopefully this saga is at an end and I can save up to replace this unit with a better one in a year or so and relegate this unit to distributed audio throughout the house, or a bedroom unit. The internal amps havent been used in about 3+ years since I have had my Carver doing all the real work.

I will be buying a fan to put above the HDMI board just because.

Besides Pioneer I dont really know who I would want to go with. Onkyo and Denon have their own issues and I haven't ever use a Yamaha AVR so I dont know jack about its auto-cal software. Anthem is decent and solid but dont really offer ANYWHERE near the features of other AVR's. HK's have a really weird autocal software thats pretty buggy and NAD's are decent but again more than the Pio's and dont really offer much more.

If it means anything, the 3010 seems to run MUCH cooler than my 1007 ever did. I don't know if they've redesigned their HDMI boards or what, but after several hours of hard use, the area above the HDMI ins was barely warm on my 3010. Maybe they've finally licked that problem. Can't blame you for wanting to go Pioneer though. Not a fan of MCACC (especially where subwoofer calibration is concerned), but everything else about them is pretty sweet.

Of course, if I had money to spare, I would have gone with a Marantz AV8801 pre-pro and picked up another amp or two... but I digress.

I also had a hdmi board fail on my Onk TX-NR807...I liked it just fine...but one day fired it up and....nothing... I eventually figured the hdmi went out and said last rites. I figured it was the heat the Onkyos put out. I was also told that the hdmi boards were cheap and pretty much the big weak point in many avrs. Luckily..at the time I was working with a guy who knew a Pioneer distributor...so I called him out...trough him I bought my SC-57...flagship at the time...new in box with warranty...for $1200. Haven't looked back.

If the board on the Onkyo could be replaced cheap I would get it back and do it myself....but I bought it off ebay from a reseller...so I couldn't get the "free" repair even if I wanted it.

I still miss my 807...my first REAL avr...but I wouldn't trade my 57 for it...

    Good Luck.....

I went from the 705 to the 717. Huge difference in the amount of heat they dissipate. The 717 only gets a couple inches breathing room and still only gets barely warm. The 705 still works though just gets hot as it always did, and loses memory now when it s unplugged. I am glad to hear your getting a free repair.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

My unit is still working fine however in the next few months I am going to open it up and replace the caps with the highest voltage and temp rating that will fit on that location. I used to repair electronics for a living so not a big deal to me.

Glad they took care of you.
