I saw Yo Yo Ma and the Philadelphia Orchestra at SPAC (Saratoga Springs, NY) last night and all I can say is WOW.

They played 3 pieces. Yo Yo Ma only played the first composition, which lasted just about an hour, but he was incredible. I have not seen many classical performances but it was something special. Just amazing!

Yo-Yo Ma is an extraordinary musician, and he is putting out some extraordinary music in a variety of non-classical genres. If you enjoyed his performance at SPAC, have a listen to some of his albums like "The Goat Rodeo Sessions," "Songs of Joy and Peace," "Appalachian Waltz," "Heartland," "Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon," and "Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone." His versatility is as remarkable has his mastery of the cello.

My daughter shared a stand in the violin section of the youth orchestra of the New England Conservatory with his daughter. My wife and I had a few brief conversations with him. He is also an extraordinary human being, as you would expect, perhaps.

Great stuff from a great performer. Did anyone see that series where he traveled the world trying to learn something about the "music" of very different cultures from our own from gatherer/hunters in Africa to...It was pretty interesting. I've also had the opportunity of seeing him perform and engage in a Q&A with a more intimate audience. A very humble man!

The Cello is also such a wonderful "voice" that can express so many things from great joy and beauty to the deepest loss and sorow!

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is my all-time favorite SACD.

Just amazing...If you haven't yet, I do urge you to give it a listen. That disc has brought tears to many who've listened to it here. Very powerful.

I often play it late at night while spending a few quite moments with my little yorkie before putting her to bed. She goes from rambunctious to calm in no time.

Yo-Yo playing with Chris Botti on Botti's Blu-ray (with the Boston Pops) is also quite moving. LOTS of talent on that stage for that concert.

Yo-Yo Ma has two albums with which I am familiar that include music he has gleaned from international trips: "Silk Road Journeys: when Strangers Meet" and "Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon." These are obviously about the music traditions along the silk road between Europe and Asia. I prefer the "Beyond the Horizon" music, which IMHO joins our traditions in music with the ones the Silk Road Ensemble discovered on its journeys in a far more pleasing way than the "rawer" versions of the Middle and Far Eastern Traditions drawn upon in "When Strangers Meet." But that is a matter of taste. Both call upon unusual instrument (to the Western ear) and unusual rhythms and tonality compared to Western traditions. Yo-Yo Ma is a great musician!

I'll have to look for similar excursions that he has made into African music.

Thanks for all of the suggestions about Yo-Yo Ma's CDs.

I knew after seeing him play live a few days ago that I would want to get some of his CDs but I didn't know where to start so this was very helpful.

Moose68Bash, thanks for all of the recommendations. I will start with Goat Rodeo Sessions (Amazon has the CD/DVD combo for about $13) and Appalachian Journey.

    Thanks again!!!!
