I stepped out back to "water a tree", looked up at the sky, and noticed a star moving in a straight line. Is that a satellite, I thought. It has been a while since I have seen one. Anyway, I came in a Googled the ISS tracker, and sure enough it was overhead.

There is an app called ISS Spotter. It uses your location and tells you when all the visible passes are. I watch it all the time.

Nope. The tree is thriving after starting this a couple of years ago.

Peak weekend for the Perseid "meteor shower" this weekend... :-)

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2013/08/09/perseid_meteor_shower_2013_catch_the_falling_stars.html

Northeast is the worst skyview from the new place... but the blog above says "the more open sky, the better..." (even if not looking straight down the barrel of Perseus) :-)

You sure it was the ISS and not some other satellite? Every time I've seen the ISS it almost looked like a cluster of objects, moving together. And it's bright, brighter than Venus.

Well, I didn't get its 'N' number as it went by, but it was supposed to be overhead following a southeast to northwest path. As you say, it is bright. With all the light pollution around here, only the brightest stars shine.

If you frequently star at the sky while watering the trees at night google the Heavens Above web site. Lots of things you can see once regstered and you enter your location. The Iridium flares happen fairly frequently and it's amazing how accurate the data is on the occurances. Even in fairly light polluted areas you can still see the "flare" at it's brightest but it's much more interesting to be able to see the start to finish of them.

It's pretty cool to spot a satellite or ISS going over you. I remember we flew back home from Shuttle flight support one day, checked ISS tracker and ISS would go over Toronto in the evening right after Shuttle separated from it. So went to the lake and watched TWO stars separating from each other :)

Download the NASA app as it will track anything heavenly that you can see from your location with times, directions, etc; very fun.
