I was certain that this OPPO is a universal player., but I can't find my manual or a clear answer on the web.

I want to get a Region 2 dvd (the Danish The Bridge).

Will the OPPO play this?

thanks,

Neil

Universal means that it will play different formats such as CD's, DVD's, Blu-rays and possibily SACD's. It does not mean it plays all regions. It would have to be what's called a region free player to do that.

I was going to mention Neil, if yours isn't already region free, I believe Oppo sells the chip to upgrade it. Maybe others can chime in who have upgraded their Oppo units.

Region 2 for dvd includes Europe, South Africa, Egypt and Japan. You'd likely need a mod kit to play that dvd on a NA unit. The 83 is a few years old now, you may not find/or it may not be worth your while to install one. Even with the newer 103-105 Oppos, some people are having issues with their region free mod kits after firmware updates, making me think you'd likely have to have a really big collection of off region discs to install one IMO. Assume you can't find that dvd in Region 1, have you tried Region A for Blu-ray? Maybe scour Amazon and some other places to see if they have...

And I could be wrong here, but I think region free mod kits are all 3rd party.

Or do what I do, rip it to mp4 or mkv and play it that way.

Really. I suspect Oppo would be violating some license agreement if they did that. Otherwise, what is the point of having regions?

Thanks BF, I wasn't sure about it and that's why I was hoping other members would chime in if they had more info on the region free modification for Oppos.

Well, I was just making a guess, but it seemed reasonable. It probably isn't hard to Google if anyone is really interested.

Once Oppo started manufacturing Blu-ray players they had to stop building in the ability to switch to region free capability for DVD's through the setup menu. There are hardware kits available for Oppo Blu-ray players, but hardware changes are required to get region free capability from them and as mentioned above the hardware modifications can make players unstable. I have an Oppo DV-983H which was one of their last DVD players before their first Blu-ray player came out. That is easily made region free by entering "9210" at the setup menu to bring up a hidden region menu. Plays PAL DVD's from any region flawlessly, and the picture quality is still amazing for DVD. I used it recently to watch the British version of the Columbo boxed set which is PAL region 2 or 4. Also worth noting is that many boxed sets of DVDs are available from Amazon.co.uk for much cheaper than from the US version of Amazon and I've usually received shipments from England within 3 or 4 days of ordering, but I am on the East coast. VAT (tax) also does not apply when ordering from the US, so that knocks about 20 percent off the listed price. The Bridge would cost $33 shipped from here on DVD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0072HTWQM/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d1_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1AZK2TR5YWFE2J7NC7EQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=418445227&pf_rd_i=468294 It's also available on Blu-ray, but the picture quality from my 983H has meant I've had no desire to try and find a region free Blu-ray player.

There are many other DVD players that can be made region free from their remote control or are sold as region free.
