I almost have deb convinced there are dependable, cheaper phone devices that use high speed internet out there.

Not really interested in magic jack, as we need something at least as dependable as our land line phone system is now, in case 911 is necessary.

We cant get wireless reception right here unfortunately.

About to get our read on, but i also value your real world experience.

We have 10meg cable modem internet access, roughly 1 meg upload speed, in case that matters.

Thanks in advance.

    Scottyboy76,

I believe the problematic part for you is " We cant get wireless reception right here unfortunately". Most people have their cell phones as back when the internet goes down. I've been using Vonage from since 2004. My bill is less than $30 a month.

I went this route for a while until I didn't want to pay for it anymore. We are a only cell phone house; one for myself and my wife.

I used Vonage for about 3 years and had no complaints. Paid $19.99 for the lower minute plan which was way more than enough, but the fees brought it to about $30. I recently switched to the phone offered by my cable company, Charter, and it's just as reliable as the Vonage was and is about $20 and there are no extra fees.

Thanks guys, we have phone and internet through ETC, our local cable co.

I have heard snippets on Clark Howards radio show about some of the services that are one low fee per year, after buying a module from the co.

Im hoping to be able to see some real savings from what we pay now, but not at the expense of reliability.

Im gonna go to howards sight in a few minutes and see what hes saying.

Scott, why not MagicJack? I've had it for a year now, and never had a problem with it. My monthly phone bill is $0.00.

Just for you to look into: Skype will give you a phone number for a once a year fee I believe and Google Voice is free.

Skype is a possibility. We used Vonage for a couple of years but it ate into our bandwidth so much that it was ALWAYS STUTTERING and made it almost impossible to use long distance. It was also constantly going OFF line, knocking out my cable modem. I can't say enough "bad" about this option unless you have really HIGH SPEED internet, like more than 20Mg. Not sure if 10 Mg is enough to escape problems described? We went back to a land line!

OOma was the service i had clanging around in my old head but could not recall.

It has had a good rep, but i think as was stated here, the lack of cell service here will keep us from going to a net based phone service.

I appreciate all the help and advice guys.
