So I got my gov't dole and in fact did apply a first coat of a satin clear poly finish .No pictures you know what it looks like already and not much has changed. So they will get another coat or 2 once dried I'm not sure if I should light sand in between I really don't have the patience for this any more. Now ,some of you dudes ragged on me for using Pledge on the front motor boards and rears not the good stuff or tops.So what are these things made of MDF?In my world MDF is a wood product which = cheap furniture=a dash of Pledge. It's not acetone, turpentine,or bezine, it's Pledge. What is going to happen? Are mushrooms going to sprout out of these things.Listen, as they they say in DA Bronx it's my football so leave it there.

Hopefully you will a nice sheen on the topps and sides and underlip of my 2 beauts. So far 2 coats w/ no sanding in between.Jeese was Absolutely right that they needed a protectorant from the tops drying out and I knew this but just had to wait a bit .I w/o a doubt like the new sheen and maybe invest in another coat or 2.Enjoy.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

The silicone in Pledge causes a contaminant problem called "fisheye" if it gets into newly applied finishes. It is best to keep it out of the house altogether if you ever intend to refinish anything.

That's very informative but for the 19th time I did not touch any part of anything I refinished. I just wiped the fronts and backs w/o touching any of the speakers .surrounds or screws .I have an absolutely perfect finish of black paint or whatever they originally used .No streakes,no fish eye or any other detrement these wonderful speakers. That's why I again took shoots of the fronts to prove the point that nothing happened. No one is winning this one but me.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Lew,
As I stated in your other thread, silicone migrates (spreads), which means it could possibly end up contaminating your end caps, electrical connections, etc. even though you only applied it to the front and back. As jimbo1421 stated, best to keep it out of your house. Other problems with silicone on furniture is it smears when touched and acts like a magnet for dust, dirt and grime.
The front bezel on your SDA's is vinyl covered particle board. Only the TL models have MDF bezels, which are also vinyl covered. The back should be vinyl covered too, but IIRC, early SDA backs where simply painted.

Jesse, By now you must know that I respect what you say w/ all your advice. You were absolutely right on the point that they needed a finish .Ok again I will relent I will wipe them down maybe after all is dry and not apply anything.I really do not remove the grill covers all that often so there really is not an urgent need to clean them like dressers and armoirs. You got admit that I'm stubbburn mule of a dude and if there is an inkling of me being right until proven wrong I go w/ me.Thanks again Pledge is OUT!!!.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Good question.
Would you consider applying vegetable oil to your furniture, floors or speakers? Of course not.
Well, Murphy's Oil Soap is a vegetable oil and potassium hydroxide (think lye) based product. That alone should be enough to stop anyone from using it, but in case it isn't, the fact that using it involves a lot of water should. Water will find any scratch, crack, etc. in the finish, get under it and cause delamination.
My suggestion, throw it out with the garbage.Political Correctness'.........defined

The guy who did my wood floors gave me the exact same advice as Jesse. Take the Murphy's Oil Soap and throw it in the garbage. He told me that if he needs to do work on the finish of floors where Murphy's was applied, there is no choice but to sand down to bare wood and start over, whereas otherwise you can often just do a light screening and apply another coat of poly. He told me 17 years ago that the best way to clean a wood finish is 1/3 white vinegar a d 2/3 water. 17 years later, the floors still look great.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

A slightly damp soft cloth to pick up the dust and if there's any moisture left follow up with a dry soft cloth. Endust applied to a soft cloth also works.Political Correctness'.........defined

I think thia is where it ends on the wookworking side of things. 3 coats of Minwax clear satin poly.Let dry in between coats and I really like the results. I know cables will be on the agaenda as soon as some mad $ comes in.I threw one pix of stain before any treatment was done. They look and feel great Any descrephincy you might notic is just the light of the sun coming in .They are the same colors2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E
