What is a great pair of $500 speakers?
A friend needs a pair of L/R bookshelf speakers for under $500 new or used for use with an HT receiver, 80wpc, 6 ohm capable. 60% movies, 40% music. Average size livingroom. I'm not sure what to suggest as I've not heard much at that price range. Any suggestions?
So far we have been thinking of used LSi7s and Focal 706V bookshelves. Music direct has the 706V for $450 right now.

I really like the LSi sound, so the 7's would be a good call. I haven't heard any RTia speakers, but maybe the A3's would be a good call as most people say their good for HT.
I'm sure there are many good options out there in other brands for the price, but I just haven't heard them.2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A -

PSB Image are very hard to beat given those requirements. I enjoyed the time with mine and had them longer than any other speaker to date. If you decide to go that route check out Saturday audio for a good price.

I 2nd PSB! -
Funny thing is that I don't think PSB are the best or even a great choice in the price range of their highest line, but in the Image and Imagine series they're a great option.

Seeing that you were looking into the Focal 706's I was wondering if he might consider a nice pair of JMLabs Focal 705's? I have a set that needs to find a new home in the $200 range plus shipping. I'd be happy to start a for sale thread and post pics if you think it's a possiblility.2-ch System: Parasound P/LD 2000 pre, Parasound HCA-1000 amp, Parasound T/DQ Tuner, Phase Technology PC-100 Tower speakers, Technics SL-1600 Turntable, Denon 2910 SACD/CD player, Peachtree DAC iT and X1asynchorus USB converter, HSU VTF-3 subwoofer. -

That's a good offer, leaves plenty of budget for nice stands, cables, sub, receiver upgrade etc. -

I bought a pair of mint used level 3 bookshelf HTD speakers for about $100.00 3 yrs. ago and they sound decent in an office rig. Mine are a bit bigger and are ported and have a ribbon style tweeter. Maybe others with HTD speakers can chime in with a nay or nay.

Looked into Wharfedale at all?
These go up to 30kHz, not that you can hear that high.

How about looking for RTi4 or RTi6 or maybe some Monitor 5's if use is an option. I am not sure I will go very loud with the LSi7 given they are 4ohm and that may be a problem for the AVR.
Cheers
