A heaping helping of Tuna

Last weekend I made annual trip to see Electric Hot Tuna in a new venue for me.The State Theater of New Brunswick,on the same vain as the Count Basie maybe a bit larger.The 1st thing I notice ia that they were using old school stacked P.A. on the sidesof the stage instead of the omnipresent Line Arrays that hang from the trusses.Opening was Leon Russell who I haven't seen in literally 43 years since the big weekend at New Paltz w/ on Saturday Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee,The Young Bloods and Hot Tuna.Sunday was the original Jefferson Airplane then headlining was Joe Cocker and the Mad Englishmen w/ Leon Russell as band leader, piano player and 2nd lead guitarist on a black beauty LP Standard.
Leon a bit frail comes on w/ a cane but nothing wrong w/ his voice or fingers and starts off a bunch of 40ish songs like Swinging In My Sweet Babys Arms and things like that.Mid set he did a nice medley of Delta Lady>Jumping Jack Flash>Papa Was A Rolling Stone>Kansas City after 40 minutes gone w/ standing O.For me the sound was muddy and only hoped it got better and it did.
Tuna comes out a bit stripped downw/o G.E.Smith but Barry was there on mandolin various other minature wacky looking guitars playing through a single speaker Louis Co.amp. Jorma both used an electrified Taylorand a beautiful avocadoe green LP he's been using for a few years noe and a larger 4x Louis Co.amp.They started w/ True Religion then I Can See The Light and full bore searing electric from then on.Jack actually stole the show this nightw/ booming solos and giving the volume pedai a work out.
My likeness can be seen on the rear cover of the Young Bloods album Rock Festival,they were doing adience shots and ther I am, if you look about 12 o'clock from the media box you will see a tall blond dude about 3 people to the right is me w/ an acid grin a mile wide opened collared shirt and longish hair .Have fun find WALDO or me

Last time I saw the Dead was when I was in New Mexico doing work at Sandia Labs and they just set up at Telluride Co. And jammed for a whole weekend! That was a party! Saw Leon Live with Rev Patrick Henderson and Black Grass in Murfreesboro Tenn. think it was 74 or so....that was a barn burner too!

We seem to have some minor things in common.Coming cross country we stopped in New Mexico and clearly remember sightseeing up on Sandia Peak.About the Burgers album Tuna was doing a free concert in Vicente Park out in avenues of S.F. and they all pulled up in that very car you see on that album cover. Yea...seems like it.Albuquerque was a nice time in my life...the old technology certainly has its place for sound reinforcement..I agree one hundred percent!

Used to take Tramway Road to the end and take the Tram up to a restaurant called The High Finance...first proposed to my wife there over dinner...spectacular view of the whole city from up there,sunset was incredible!

Love seeing Tuna electric or acoustic and I see them every chance i can. Its just amazing how accomplished each musician is. They are probably second or third to Dylan in bands I've seen the most, but I've seen Dylan over 50 times.

I was in Albuquerue up until 75 when my family relocated to San Diego.
Lots of good times for me as well - although no Hot Tuna concerts - but I did 'discover' them a couple of years later in High School.
Spent lots of weekends hiking & camping in the Sandias. I always loved watching the sunsets no matter what the season - the colors were awesome.
H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music. -
Hearing Tuna with Papa John Creach was a real treat. BTW, Jorma and Jack are two of the nicest folks I've ever met.If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

There is a radio station from a local university here that broadcasts sessions from Jormas Fur Piece Ranch that has live stuff from H T also acoustic.....very good when I can catch it!

Never got into Tuna, but was a huge fan of the original Jefferson Airplane. "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" still blows me away - one of the best live albums, right up there with "Johnny Winter And . . . Live", The Who "Live at Leeds", Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus".
Jack and Jorma are just great musicians. Which Tuna album should I start with to explore their music? Drumminman,If your into the acoustic side of Tuna try their 1st album recorded live in a club in Berkley Ca.Simply called Hot Tuna. Next if you want the full treatment get Hot Tuna Trimmed and Burning kind of a greatest hits package deal w/ songs from multiple albums and time frames but still way back in time it's a double cd .I also was fortunate to talk briefly w/ Jorma just to b.s. about guitars ,I thought he collected Gibson Firebirds and he said no not really and that he's into LP s now and the boutique Louis Co. amps.
