Exactly. If it's not made public, the manufacturer will simply try to sweep it under the rug, and may even sue the person that brought the issue to their attention. Making it public is the only way to guarantee that something will actually be done about the problem.

I'm not exactly a trust the corporations type myself, but I trust government even less. The thing for concern as I see it anyway is by making it public to all, the bad people have instant access to that information to do as they will. Those who need to fix the problem are automatically behind the 8 ball to fix it....which takes time. So you have a time advantage for....the bad people. Doesn't compute in my brain as responsible.

Giving a corporation a chance to fix flaws before handing that info to those who may use it wrongly seems like the way to go. You always have that info in your back pocket if they do nothing to use at a later date should a corporation skirt the issues.

Let me see if I can't paint a better scenario. Your daughter is cruising down Highway 1 in California. The previous day the car was getting serviced when some snot nosed nerd decided to try out what he heard at this convention. Hacks the car, tells it to turn left into the ocean. You read about it in the news.....oh, that's horrible.......how could that have happened......who's responsible ? Doesn't matter now, your kid is dead. I hear so much jibberish about corporate responsibility, how about personal ? Would not the tech guys who released that info be held accountable ? Probably not, the deep pockets are with the corporations, right ? To me anyway, it's very irresponsible to release info bad guys can use to do harm to good people. Common sense in my book.

Heck, why not have these hacking nerds turn their attention to travel agencies then publicly tell criminals how to do it to find out when people will not be in their homes. You say that's to get the travel agencies to beef up their security ? While in the meantime homes are getting robbed ? That's all well and good ? Think for a second.....
