I have a shot at getting a set of these from another Club Polk member. My understanding is they are in fine shape. They were bought new in December,'85(1st. gen ?). They do come from a heavy smokers home. I'm a non-smoker. My question is, what would be a fair price for both of us, assuming all is well with them? Thanks for any input.

The best advise i can give is to determine what they are worth to you and the seller can do the same. somethings value to one may be different to another, but opportunities to get these come up less and less and prices vary greatly depending on the individual seller/ buyer. I paid a grand for my originals a few years ago and drove approximately 5 hours one way to get them. with fuel and other trip expenses that came to around $1400. More than what members here were valuing them at but i wanted them real bad and they are worth much more than that to me now. Good luck.

Trust me when I say that I don't want to blow this deal for you or the seller, but with you being a non smoker, this pair may prove hard to live with. Depending on how long they have been exposed, smoke will have permeated everything from the wood and grill cloth, to the crossover and damping material inside. Even a complete rebuild may not remove the smell entirely.

For that reason alone, personally, I would walk away, but at the very least, to me they are not worth much. 5 to 700 tops. YMMV...

If you end up buying them, consider buying or renting an Ozone generator to kill the smoke smell.

I bought a used textile motorcycle jacket that absolutely reeked from cigarette smoke. Washed in multiple times, used fabric sorftener, Fabreeze etc. nothing worked. Put it in the powder room with the ozone generator running and the door closed overnight. The smell was gone.

They use these things to get the "dead body smell" (I hate when that happens) out of motel rooms, car trunks etc.

Ozone generators can also wreck havoc on stuff ...namely your lungs and other soft materials. it is a fine line to walk....

Thanks for the responses. I'm still at a loss here. I know this is Club Polk and all, but I'm sure everyone here has been exposed to other speakers (I personally LOVE JBL's), is this one of the "greats". I'm looking for that sonic nirvana, as we all are. From what I gather they are very good. Prices are all over the place. $500.00- $1200.00. The above post seemed to speak to later models. Thanks again

The link I posted was about SDA SRS's, which seem to be what you are asking about. The $500.00 price John threw out is ridiculous. I'd say the average price iin average condition s between $1000.00 to $1200.00. Why don't you tell us what the seller is asking.

I agree Jesse that the 500 dollar figure appears ridiculous at first glance. Being smoke damaged IMHO. They are not worth as much as a pair that has been meticulously cared for(smoke/pet free)etc. the price I gave is taking into account that they will need to be completely rebuilt and refinished to remove the odor, at least to make them palatable for my use. The OP may not share my opinion, but I felt it should at least be part of the discourse.

The fact that sellers stress "smoke free/pet free" in their adds tells me that needs to be a consideration. The seller is asking $1200.00. I'm thinking $800.00 is fair.
