Could my cross overs be the cause of failing SL2500 tweats on my Monitor 5 Series 2?

Hi everyone.
I am new to this forum.
I have a set of Monitor 5 Series 2 speakers that I bought new in 1992 and have them hooked up to a HK3500 receiver bought at the same time.
One of the tweaters went out a while ago and thought it was an issue with the receiver so replaced that with a HK3490. Obviously, this did not solve the issue.
Moved my working SL2500 over to make sure it was not the cross over. It worked in the other speaker so just left it there. Two days later, had it on as background noise (not high) and now this one has gone out as well.
Is this just luck or could something in that speaker be the cause?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi, We know it's not your receiver because it happened with both of them.
We know 2 tweeters have been lost due to being in that one (cab) system.
I wonder if the capacitor in the x-over could be the cause, charging up and then spiking the tweeter with a serious enough voltage to blow it.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

It could be possible. My RTA11TL's are the same vintage. When I started upgrading the XO, I found a paralleled cap that was not soldered. This did not result in a tweeter failure but did shift the crossover point that could eventually lead to failure.
Look for bad solder joints. If they are ok then start checking for bad components.Stan

Yes! Skrol is a genius
By the shift in the crossover being lowered and causing frequencies too low for the tweeter to handle, burn out, very possible.
Look at it this way you need to update those old crossovers anyway.
The replacement tweeter of SL2500 and SL3000 is RD0198-1
Well first off, they're only gonna cost you $48+tax each including shipping.
All you have to do is say that you're a Club Polk member.

Took a look at the cross overs and they look ok. I do not have the equipment to test the components, so I am at a bit of a crossroads.
Thinking about getting some new speakers....either the Monitor 65t and adding a sub. Or maybe going for a set of the RTi 8s from the Polk store on Ebay. Not sure if I have enough power with my HK3490 to drive the RTi8s.
Thoughts? -
no cross roads.. can you solder? new film caps and better resistors will blow away most other speakers.....as the old Nike commercial said ....Just do It!! most of the time just looking you'll see nothing out of the ordinary. But those are long in the tooth and the electrolytic's are well past there prime IF there ever was one....

Any suggestions on where to go to learn/buy the parts needed? This is outside of my wheelhouse.....always looking to learn new stuff.

You need Capacitors and Resistors
Parts Express

SonicCraft

Pull them, look at your caps and resistors and my post #4 on this page for your diagram.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198
