My bro-in-law mentioned he may be looking into upgrading his TV sound. While he does have a modest stereo set up that could easily be adapted to the TV he doesn't want the hassle of running wires, etc. even though I offered to do it for him. I have no experience with soundbars so hoping some of you do and would like to get your suggestions. He mentioned a Bose speaker(at which I cringed) and since I have no experience with their TV speakers all I could say was that he probably could do better and for less $$. Reading reviews is one thing but I would rather hear some real world experiences. I'm guessing he wants to be in the $400 or less market.
Yep, my name really is Bob.

The Polk 6000 is an excellent suggestion. If he wants to spend a little more, the Polk 9000 is simply amazing.

Zvox 430 HSD. Picked it up on Ebay for $200. MSRP is $400. The whole Zvox line is great. Got two Zvox mini's for the bedrooms. Can't go wrong. Check out website. Zvox.com.

Amazon has the Polk Audio SurroundBar 9000 IHT on Sale for $399 with free shipping. The Amazon Seller is Abt Electronics. This a great price considering the $799 MSRP. This is priced only $25 more than the Polk SurroundBar 6000. Great Deal. Better hurry.

The SurroundBars with wireless subwoofer are a nice option, however I would hold out until this fall for the new Andrew Jones designed SP-SB23W for $399 from Pioneer.

    http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/blog/2013/06/26/pioneer-announces-andrew-jones-designed-soundbar-399

Each of the bar’s six drivers has its own 28-watt Class D amp, with a digital signal processor doing EQ and crossover filtering for each driver. These active crossovers deliver far better fidelity than the ultra-simplified passive crossovers used on almost all other soundbars, with lower distortion, higher maximum usable output, better off-axis performance, and less tonal coloration.

Zingo, the Polk SurroundBar 9000 has all that the Pioneer does and more.

    http://www.hometheater.com/content/polk-surroundbar-9000-iht-soundbar

"For starters, as noted earlier, each driver (five woofers and three tweeters) is driven by its own dedicated 45-watt amplifier. In addition to providing more punch and overall dynamic range, dedicated amps allow all the high- and low-pass filtering to be done electronically, thereby eliminating the potential losses and distortion that pesky passive crossovers can cause (especially those used in lower-priced speakers)."
