Forcing 2 ch Stereo out all speakers

I have an Onkyo TX-DS898 Receiver driving my surround sound. All the speakers work fine when playing DVD's with 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound. I guess as expected, my CD's in stereo only get sound coming out of my front speakers. Is there any way to force the sound to exit all the R or L speakers in my system, not just the front ones?

Thanks

    Welcome to Club Polk,
You have to use either 5 or 6 channel stereo mode or dolby prologic or prologic II. I dont know if your receiver has these but it probably does. Hope this answers your question.

That's because music is meant to be listened to in stereo, not 5.1, 6.1...10.2...Pfft!

    that's only if it's a stereo recording..
if it's a mulitchannel recording.. then 5.1 is the way to go..

I know you were talking stereo (L&R) only..

oh so i got a ? why would you want to force two channel stereo signal into 5, 6 channels? It's going to sound really strange i would think. unlike DVD-a or SACD which is mixed for 5,6 speakers.

If you're looking for "surround sound" from your set up.. then it might sound funky. very unnatural at best.

I have that reciever along with 3 other Onkyo's and they have great ALL CHANNEL STEREO dsp. Toggle trough your DSP's and you will see it. I listen to almost everything (satillite/ps2/music) in all channel stereo. It rocks!!!!!!!
PS----Nice Reciever, if you have no clue that your reciever has ACS you need to get your manual and get your read on because you got an awesome reciever.

I have a "Widescreen" DSP mode (Denon's version of Logic 7), a "5/7 Stereo" DSP mode, and a DTS Neo 6 DSP mode. They will all upmix any 2 channel signal to all speakers.

The 5/7 Stereo mode pretty much gives equal preference to all speakers, without much signal processing. The Neo 6 mode is too bass heavy IMO.

The Widescreen mode is much better - it can also be used with any DD/DTS signal and provides a true 7.1 upmix with discrete matrixing on the L/R rear surround channels.

It doesn't have any weird sound effects or reverb like some of the other DSP modes like Stadium or Jazz Club, etc. so it remains faithful to the source in that regard.

The Denon (Motorola Sharc) DSP is extremely intuitive, and I find Widescreen mode to be an outstanding facsimile of a DD/DTS source when watching OTA broadcast television. It gives center channel preference to dialogue, and sends surround and panning effects to the appropriate speaker at the right time. Very impressive.

6 channel stereo does sound crappier, but when u really want it loud, 6 speakers will out do the 2.

you can listen to a 2 channl signal in surround modes, but it usually doesnt sound as good as listening to it in stereo. i use the srs 5.1 circle surround for 5 channel music and the 6 channel stereo mode.

expiriment with the surround mode settings and decide which one sounds the best for music. you should have some kind of option that allows you to listen to all of your speakers with music. if u dont i think its time for a new receiver.

Maybe 7 channels will sound better than 6.;)
Like I said and he said his reciever is bad **** at $1500 it rocks. And has like 5 DSP's that play all speakers. On all souces.

Like I Said - Krug really needs to learn about his reciever becuase it ROCKS......

Reference level hybrid tube/SS power @ 475wpc into 6 ohms, the best hybrid tube SACD/CD player made, (both on a dedicated 20 amp line) and Polk SDA SRS 2.3TL's all wired up with MIT Shotgun cables. No contest!!!
