I have a Yamaha RX620 receiver and I am trying to add a turntable. I bought a Teac 988, non amplified turntable and it did not work. Volume sounds hollow and distant. I returned it and got the Teac 688 amplified turntable and the volume is loud, but blurry. You cannot understand the voices. All that my Yamaha manual says is to use an MM cartridge or a high-output MC cartridge. The cartidge on the Teacs are VM. Could that be causing the problem. What is the difference between the MM and VM cartridges. What should I do.

    MM= moving magnet
    MC= Moving Coil
    VM= ??? new one on me...

    Having gone to an "amplified" TT (which I presume means it has a built in phono-amp), you need to go into your receiver's Aux input, not its TT input. The signal is likely too strong now and is overloading the Yammie's phono pre. Make this swap first and get back to me/ us...

    Added possibility is that the TT is not set up correctly. Who set up the TT for you? It's possible that the stylus pressure and/ or anti-skate are not dialed in. But will address this later if sound is still not right after you make the input switch...

    Tour2ma, Thanks a lot. I switched to the cd input and it works perfectly. My aux input is used for something else.

    Just curious! Why didn't the non amp turntable work on the phono input.

    You're welcome... glad all is well.

    Only guess I can make is that the VM cartridge is a low output model... too low for your Yammie's phono pre...
