Need to increase rms at low frequency

I've got a Sony sa-ws230 super acoustically loaded woofer hooked up to an RCA SA-155 integrated stereo amp which splits the sound to the subwoofer and four other speakers I have and the sound quality is great until the bass gets to below around 40hz. From there it just becomes almost impossible to hear unles you are right next to it. Any suggestions on how to fix this or what I'm doing wrong?

You need a better sub. I checked the specs on the Sony and it only puts out 100 watts (at 10% distortion) and although it's rated from 28-200hz I would imagine that it is down 3db somewhere in the upper 40's to low 50's at best. it's just not built to be able to put out the kind of low bass you require.

Thank you, anything specific you would recommend? A personal favorite that you know can handle it maybe?

Or maybe just a brand that's usually good through all frequencies?

If you can hear the bass beside it, but nowhere else, the sub is sitting in a null. Try placing it somewhere else in the room.

+1. Try in your prefered seat and crawl around the room. Place it where you hear it best. That should hold you untill you upgrade.

Thanks! Would it help to elevate it a little? It has the bass in the lower frequencies, you just can't hear it unless you're on the floor with it

Elevating it would probably not help at all.

2 things come to mind.

First, as others have said, the sub is probably sitting in a null spot in the room, a dead spot in other words. Move it around some in the room .

Second, I don't think that sub is even capable of going lower than 40 hz, which may explain a lot.

Ok, third, isn't that sub passive ? More than likely it's one of those HTIB subs, which is highly unlikely your hitting 40 hz.

Sorry, fourth....if that's the same rca integrated I'm thinking off, isn't that a headphone amp ? Very low powered for a desktop. Which also means your running small 'puter speakers connected to this subwoofer, correct ? If that's the case, 40 hz is a dream with that gear my friend.
