Lets start from the beginning. What is your source?

is the optcal out from a DVD player, computer, cable box, apple tv?

most of the time you need to go to the audio settings of the source and turn off PCM, turn on 16bit, switch from PCM or DTS over to dolby digital.

Even if your surround sound processor is set to 2ch or dolby prologic music it will switch to dolby digital 5.1 when it gets the dolby signal from the source.

    So, What is the source?

I know that toslink / SPDIF cable isn't capable to carry DTSMA / True HD. It can only carry the core DTS / DD sound track. You can change the audio setting from your AVR, and make it a 7.1 extended stereo set up.
