Need help choosing correct receiver for polk 70 floorstanding speakers.

Can someone please advise me in choosing a correct reciever or amp for Polk 70 floor standing speakers, i am looking to spend between 200 to 400 dollars , i only listen to music with these speakers, not interested in hooking up to surround sound, i am looking to spend between 200 to 400 dollars , thanks.

Hello and welcome to the Club! Are you talking about the Monitor 70s?

Are you doing 2 channel or are you going to add more speakers for surround later? Do you mainly do movies or music?
What type of music? And do you have a brand preference? (Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer, etc).

thanks nguyendot, yes these speakers are mon itor 70s , i will only be using these speakers for listening to music on a Cd player or on my laptop, i have no brand preference , i listen to a variety of music ( jazz, rock ) thanks

My recommendation would be the Hk3490 great receiver.

I second the HK3490, or if you go used you can find many cool integrated amps that will power them well.

I'm found a refurbished Nad 326bee for $420 with free shipping, if you can find one of those or a Nad 316 i'd highly recommend it. The HK is a good choice as well, but i'd take the Nad imho. Check craigslist too, i've found plenty of used Nad, Rotel, B&K, Carver's in your price range too.

It looks like the HK3490 and Nad 326bee have full range pre-outs that you'll be using when you eventually add an amp, so that's one more thing they have going for them.

There really is no "correct" receiver. In 2 channel mode pretty much anything out there will drive them fine. Pick a receiver with the bells and whistles you think you may want or use down the road and the rest is just preference.

had a nad 725bee (pretty much the same as the 326bee) and it drove my m70's well.

The H/K is an excellent choice. In your price range you could also scoop up a used 2-channel amp and pre-amp and get some pretty good bang for your buck there. There are plenty of Rotel, NAD, and B&K amps to be found out there if you're not in a rush.

I have the monitor 70's, 40's and cs20 center and I drive them all with an Onkyo TX-NR809 without any problem. They sound good with music and home theater. I also have a PSW125 sub.

I know, right? That was a head-scratcher for me as well when I first read that in the crutchfield product description. Talk about redundant. It was like "A Few Good Men." Lt. Caffey: You mean 'full range' pre-outs? Col. Jessup: Is there another kind?

My guess is that crutchfield has adapted to questions from all manner of consumer by either over-simplifying or over-describing. In this case they may have been trying to distinguish the Main pre-outs from the sub pre-outs. I decided to err on the side of caution for the benefit of the OP. This decision may have been poorly thought-out and my intentions unwarranted.

If you were willing to go used, i had very good results with an NAD 7600. Throw as much power as you can at those boys.

Check out Accessories 4 less and get the most AVR for your money. But be prepared to settle for mediocre sound compared to what you could be yielding from your 70's.

From my experience, the more power you feed them, the better they sound.

300wpc is not too much for these speakers, in fact, they come alive and sound better than you thought they could.

So in short, if you plan on keeping these speaker for a long time and primarily for music, I advise you to get an AVR with pre-outs, then save your coin for a hefty 2 channel amplifier.

By the time you add a power amp, you'll swear you just upgraded new speakers.

Like plainoldave insinuated, you can pretty much pump as much power as you want.
