A brilliant marketer.
The 901's were an true innovation.
After that it was just brilliant advertising and fabulous PR.
RIP Dr.Bose -
He was a true engineer and innovator ...I had Bose speaks...still have a pair...have one of those Wave Radios also!

A true audio legend. Rather one likes it or not....he brought audio to the masses. Once the average consumer got sick of the BIG BOX speakers of yesteryear messing up the decor, Bose put audio in the rooms of many. We all know someone that has a Bose product...rather we like listening to it or not. In terms of business....pure brilliance! I had a pair of Bose 301's back about the '85 / '86 time frame. I enjoyed them, they were fun and not half bad. They got sold and my trip into Polk land began with the Monitor 10.
The 1980's Bose speakers had a solid lineup and matched up to alot of speakers of that era quite well. The 501 and 601 models were fairly big and pretty solid. Of all the Bose models, the 80's 601 model impressed me the most with the twin 8" woofers and four tweeter/mids. Then they started scaling down the speakers, didn't keep up with the move to polymer type drivers and so on. Everything just got cheap with their lineup.
Anyway, RIP Dr. Bose! This was the best you created IMHO...
No excuses! -

I did watch the video and it was pretty good. I find his closing comments that start at the 54:10 mark to the end to be excellent! If you only watch a portion of the video, jump to the 54:10 mark. Great stuff, not on speakers, but life!No excuses! -

Resurrecting this thread (I think there's at least 2 like it) to add the following video which was released recently:
http://dreamandreach.bose.com
It's a bit of an interesting look into the life of Dr. Bose. It's about a 20 minute video. After a few seconds hit the "skip" link at the bottom to get to the video.
Disclaimer... I started working there a few months ago. Someday I'll own a Bose product (besides one system in one of my vehicles) once I find something I really want. But understand Polk is where I started my audio journey years ago and my house is full of Polks. So I offer a link to the video here simply as a curiosity about someone significant in the audio industry. -
Did not know he passed. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
IMO "audio wise" speaking, he must of had quite the desire and courage to enhance sound as how he thought it should sound and for that I thank him for being a pioneer to industry. -
well... this is an odd thread to make a reappearance... nearly a year and a half after his passing.
The only 'big name' loudspeaker designers from the 1950s/60s boom left (that I know of) are Roy Allison (AR, Allison) and Winslow Burhoe (EPI, Genesis, Burhoe, etc.). Allison is, I think, in his 90s but still goin' strong. There was a terrific interview with Allison and Edgar Villchur (founder of AR, who also had a long life) in Stereophile a few years back.
-
How about Arnie Nudell?? I think he still is alive and kicking isn't he?
-
probably - He is probably a contemporary of Burhoe; Allison is of the prior generation. I am just thinking of the local (New England) boys... even though I guess I've become a "west coast sound" kind of guy in my dotage!
