New Year Resolution - What do you have?

Starting this morning, I am working on my New Year resolution: quitting smoking...

I've been smoking for over 20 years, had quit a couple time in the past 5 years, and lasted about a week. This time, I hope it will last longer, got tired of being treated like pariah by my own kids (ages four and eight) :)

I use Nicorette Lozenges to fight the craving. Any success story with Nicorette stuff?

Happy New Year, guys! I'll be taking the family for a weekend in Seattle and Vancouver, BC...
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I haven't had one today either.

I have to quit. For my health, and my wallet.

    My resolution is for

    TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION

I figure, why aim low? Besides, I think this year's the one for it.

I smoked for over 20 years. I have been off of them now for 12 years. I have never looked back or regretting giving them up. Sure their were moments, but I new I was not giving up anything worthwhile. Consider your prior attempts as practice, you really do need to learn how to quit, strange as that may sound.

I made through the help of one those five day cessation classes, of the six who started two of us made it. I made it and you will too. If not this time then some other time, if you slip just start over, do not beat yourself up, lots of little tricks with carrot strips, try exercise, go for walk, try to remember what you were doing when you smoked the most and DO NOT DO THAT during the craving. I can tell you it gets much much better, then one day all of sudden you can chuckle and realize you are now in control.

My resolution if to try to develop a concept of "namaste" which in sanscript means to bow to the divine light within each of us, going to be a tough haul in my line of work.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop buying so much gear.....gee, maybe I should shoot for something more attainable. Ok, figure out what women really want. Yea, that will be easier than getting me to stop buying gear.:D

I smoked for over 20 years. I have been off of them now for 12 years.

Very close to my situation. I started smoking when I was 15 quit when I was 36 (a 3 pack a day man - you know it's got you when you light one and there's a half burnt one going in the ashtray!). I was lucky...I got a severe case of bronchitis that was so bad that it hurt too much to smoke. Stopped on a Sunday...when I was better on the following Thursday I lit one...took a couple of drags...it tasted like crap. I put it out and have not smoked another cigarette in over 14 years. No cigars, no patches...nothing...pure cold turkey. I have never missed smoking at all...and I was one of those people that really liked to smoke and had never even tried to quit. As I said...I guess I was just lucky.

I don't usually make resolutions but maybe something like....

    Buy more audio/video gear...

    More sex...

    Play more golf...

All worthy and attainable goals (in no particular order).

Thanks for the encouragement, Reel! nicotine craving is the killer, and I am not even a heavy smoker (10 cigarrettes per day) and yet, it is such a pain to get rid of. Like Russ said: health, wallet, much cheaper life insurance premium, and no tobacco stains in my car's seat (I don't smoke inside the house)...

Good luck with 2004 and your endeavors, and hope this is the year we are bringing the troops home for good!

    Russ, polkatese, and other smokers.

Reeltrouble gives some good advice. I also smoked for 20 years. Two plus packs a day. Nobody liked those cigs any more than I did. Hell I started to worry when my stash got down to a half a pack. I could not ever envision life without those Salems.

I quit 2 weeks before my spinal fusion surgery on June 1 1992 at 1:30 am. I used the patch. It was very hard at first, but like Reel said, one day I suddenly realized I was over the urge to smoke. Have not even been tempted to go back.

The money savings is a very good reward. Of course now I justify every big ticket item I get by saying to my self " look at all the money I have instead of a bunch of cig butts." Quit for your health, for your wife, for your kids, but QUIT!!!! Good luck. You can do it.

My New Years project is to lose a doctor ordered 20 lbs. I am pre diabetic, so that is a real incentive to drop those lbs.

To all those trying to quit...everyone is right... just do it for all the reasons!

A doctor friend of mine told me that the PHYSCIAL addiction to nicotine is over in about 2 weeks. A tough 2 weeks or so but still a relatively short period of time. The mental or psychological craving is the tough part that lasts much longer and is the downfall of most would be ex-smokers. He says that my ability to quit was the fact that my body got over the physical part really quick and then the bad taste of the cigarette was the possitive reinforcement I needed for the mental side...I just had no desire to smoke anymore. Your road may be tougher than mine was...but believe me...the benefits are well worth the effort!

    Man.

Is there nothing like a bunch of ex-smokers when it comes to passing out advice?:)
O.K. I know, I know. A bunch of ex drinkers, and drug addicts are also well known experts at advice giving.

It's called group therapy! :) Seriously, I appreciate all of your supports (ex-smokers with real life success story) One of the top bad habits that I really need to get rid of (staring at a naked picture of Mary Beth Decker is another one, but that's pure entertainment in my book :D )

The last thing a smoker wants to hear is advice from a non-smoker (except ex-smokers, of course); just like overweight people don't want to hear some skinny **** telling them how to lose weight.....

You can do it brother! The key is to plan things to do during the most vulnerable times, you know, after eating, with coffee, when drinking alcohol..these are the tough hurdles. Just tell yourself right after dinner, I'm gonna pick-up that Stereophile magazine and read for awhile.

When the cravings hit hard, just think to yourself "If I don't have a cigarette, what will happen to me?" Will I have some sort of episode? No. Will I fall to the floor in Anquish? Well, maybe...but seriously, no.

The key is to PRE-plan some distractions for when cravings hit.

I wish you the best of luck, take it day by day.

    Your welcome.

I do have another new years goal. I am going to cut back on my internet **** viewing. Are there any success stories from other ex-**** viewers? Lets hear how you did it? Was it difficult? Have you gone back?

I'm in on the smoking thing... I think 35 years is enough. Mostly Marlboro Lights, but did the Reds yesterday as a sort of farewell.

    polka,
I'm back on the patches as of today. Maybe we can start a thread for reinforcement.

I tried those patches, and I had trouble keeping them lit. They tasted like **** anyway.

I even went as far as the big "NO-NO" which was to light up a Lucky while I was wearing the patch. No-No because it was supposed to OD you on nicotine or some such stuff. Get you all jittery supposedly. I don't think so, cause I fell asleep right after I put out the smoke. It's those damn filters that kill you anyway, so I shy away from filtered Luckie's and go with the real deals.

    Tour,
yes, I think there are enough polkies quitting this year to have our own thread...One day and several hours so far without a puff break...nicotine craving has been strong, but successfully subdued by nicorette commit lozenges. So far so good, other than automatic instinct to hit the patio (it used to be for obvious reasons). Oh, btw, Marlboro Light has been my choice for the past 13 years (till Tuesday's midnight last year..)

    George,
I tried the patches several years ago, it made me light headed for no reason, this minty lozenges turned out to be a better alternative, so far..

Happy New Year, all! watching USC kicks Michigan's **** :D

Polkatese - Good luck in your "Adventures of the Non-Smoker". My suggestion as far as oral help, is to start chewing toothpicks... I found these Tea Tree Oil soaked toothpicks that are the bomb. If you would like me to send you some, let me know.

My New Years wish is to wake up with Rosie Griers head attached to my body.

I quit in my own silly way. IT WORKED! What I did was one day I HAD to buy some smokes and didn't have any cash left for lunch. That pissed me off so I bought salad at the grocery store and charged it. A little later I figured out how much I would spend in the next year, got on ebay and spent it all and put the total amount on a credit card via paypal. (I bought a keyboard I really wanted but could not afford). For the next few weeks I really wanted to buy another pack but lets face it, I had already dug my grave with the credit card so I couldn't give in to the temtation. If I did it would prove to me that I'm an idiot.

I haven't smoked since and as a benifit, each year I do a purchase equal to what I used to spend on smokes. It doesn't matter whether I can afford it or not. Out comes the card. This year, since prices went up, I bought a supercharger for my blazer, heh heh...

I guess my New Years resolution is to get my lazy a$$ back to the gym and get in prime time shape once again.

My New Years wish is to land an IT job. Actually, I got called in to an interview this past Tuesday for a fulltime position. I really feel like I nailed the interview, but it's one of those things that you never ever know what THEY think of you at the time. I should hear early/mid next week if I get the job.

    Happy New Year to all!

Thank you very much! This would be a huge start to the new year if I get it.

Just in case you're wondering, NO, I wouldn't give up the DJing totally unless it interferes with any new job I get. I'd be nuts to give that up!
