    Here's a thought,

    if you had less that 3 feet of space between the wall and the speaker, could you not just make some bass trap like sound absorber and place it on the side walls?

    The reason for the side wall distance is to allow the sound waves to travel properly, so no, you don't want anything to absorb the sound.

    Yes and 6 feet is even better IMHO. And nothing higher than 3 feet between them and at least 3 inches behind the front of them. Mine are 8 inches from the rear walls.
