Can you recommend a good coffee maker?

My Bunn B10 coffee maker finally died on me yesterday.
I will need to buy a new coffee maker and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one.

My budget is about $100 and my main criteria is that it brew a great cup of coffee. I am a big coffee drinker and do not need all of the bells and whistles (although programmable might be nice). I just want it to make a great cup of java. I liked the Bunn coffee makers a lot but this is the 2nd Bunn I have owned that did not last too long. They only last about 3-4 years in my experience.

I thought I would try a new brand other than Bunn.
Cuisinart gets good reviews. Does anyone have any experience with them?
Any other brands or models I should look at?

    The Cuisinart makers make a nice cup of coffee and I have owned about 3 of these. The only problem that I have found with them is the heater mechanism seems to get clogged with mineral deposits. Maybe if I had run some cleaning solution or vinager through it more often there would not have been as much of a problem. I have a KitchenAid that I picked up on sale at Costco 6 or 8 months ago and the handle is partially broken and when I went to order a new carafe, I saw on the Internet that this is a pretty common problem with this model. It makes great coffee but if I was going to get another one I think it would be a Cuisinart

    Had same issue with last 2 Bunn coffee makers, both crapped out after about 2 years. Ended up just buying a Keurig, it lasted about 2 years, the pump went bad and Keurig sent me a new one free of charge.

    I've enjoyed my Cuisinart as well (very similar model to what jeremy posted.) That being said, the carafe drives me nuts. The "pouring lip" is made in such a way that you have to turn the carafe literally upside down to get to that last cup of coffee in the AM.

    The carafe itself is nice, in that it retains the heat forever, the pouring just drives me batty. The paperless filter is indeed nice as well. And you can set up the timer to grind and brew your coffee at a certain time each AM.

    And it looks good on the kitchen counter if you have all stainless appliances....

    Regarding the Bunn coffee makers. I would suggest (if you buy one in the future) that you purchase one assembled in the US vurses China. I had to go way out of my way to get the two I bought that were assembled in the USA, but both work flawlessly. The first one I bought (and still own/use) is about 5 years old and as I said works flawlessly. That's my .02.

    The Cuisi in Jeremy's link, it's the one I have also. Consumer Reports best coffee maker a couple years ago, should be able to get it on sale for $70 or there abouts. Didn't much care for the permanent filter myself, thought it let some of the grinds through so I use bamboo paper ones. Can also be seen on the counter in 2.5 Men episodes :cheesygrin:

    Thanks for all of the feedback.

    It looks like Cuisinart is the winner (nspindel, I am sure Veronica is fantastic, ha, but I do not care for Starbucks coffee; Mikey, the jura-capresso looks great but it's outside of my price range).

    Actually, the Cuisinart mentioned in many of the posts is the same one I was looking at, and leaning towards, when I did a little online research myself last night so I am glad a lot of people have had good experiences with it.

    I prefer the paper filters as well, the permanent one is nice in a pinch but does leave some sediment in the cup and more of a hassle to clean. Also I wouldn't recommend the one with the built in grinder, my father has that model and it is more difficult to clean than a separate grinder. I have the matching 12cup cuisinart grinder as well, its much easier to clean and control the grind. A tip on the mentioned mineral deposits damaging the coffeemaker and over all taste, only use bottled drinking water or reverse osmosis filtered water, helps a bunch. Rinsing the paper filter with water before use makes the coffee better as well. Put the new paper filter in the basket and fill it with water and just dump it out, removes most of the paper dust that can affect the flavor.

    My Cuisinart works well with unbleached number two cone filters....programmable and had a little LED that lights up when it's time to clean it....Great cup of Joe too...Gold Coast Blend!

    Oh, I don't know - I think I'd recommend lifting the ground and going two prong... enough grounds in coffee as it is.

    have to say I was skeptical, considering the brand and low price, but it's the best one we've had. ALL of the parts that require cleaning are easily removed. No carafe, the brewed coffee is stored in a removable reservoir and dispensed by pressing the cup against the lever. You can program how long you want it kept hot from 0-4 hrs. Using the BOLD setting it makes a great cup of coffee. Even makes iced coffee if you are into that. We grind our own beans using a Baratza Virtuoso so YMMV depending on what you use.

    Here ya go. Just upscaled my grinder to an automatic, fried my last small one. Others have mentioned the type of water they use, sure makes a difference. I use distilled, never have to clean the machine.

    Have you tried calling Bunn? Ours started leaking after several years of use, I gave them a call to see if the maker could be repaired and they send me, free of charge, all the parts I needed to make the repair. Took every bit of 20 minutes to get back up and making coffee again. This repair has lasted several years and still going strong. Might be worth a call.

    I've been using a Capresso MT500 since 2005. Still works like the day it was new. However, I think the newer MT600 is not built as well as the older model. Production has moved to China. Overall, I prefer coffee makers with sealed thermal carafes and no bottom heaters. You get a good fresh hot brew, it doesn't keep using power and the coffee doesn't oxidize or get burnt from sitting on a burner for extended periods. Mine stays piping hot for at least 3-4 hours if full. Less if its half full. Usually, its more than long enough to get my morning coffee fix.

    bill makes an excellent point. I don't have a sealed carafe with the Cuisinart, but I have one waiting filled with hot water while the coffee brews. Once finished, I move it immediately to the carafe (after removing the hot water). Oxygen is the enemy to just brewed coffee, so it's a good idea to remove it from the burner like bill suggests and seal it up in the carafe.

    Experienced this myself too. Big Bunn fan if you don't mind the lack of features. Brews coffee like crazy...the old ones anyway. My older Bunn I had for 8 years.....newer Bunn didn't make it one year, garbage.

    Now have a Kitchenaid for 2 years now no issues. Coffee makers are a personal thing, like audio. :biggrin: There is no right or wrong coffee maker, but we all want one to last more than a year or two. Lets face it, at 100 bones, their throw aways when something goes wrong.

    It gets harder and harder to find anything made of quality to last these days. 100 bucks is about the minimum for a decent one.

    I don't agree with this at all! You can still buy your Black & Decker $20 or even $30 coffee makers along with other brands that do just that, brew coffee and will most likely die after a year. Great. But if I am going to spend $100 on a machine today, it should damn well be elite to those cheap $30 variants. Quality control has suffered over the years but morally I disagree. Can $100 not buy ANYTHING of quality anymore????? Sad...

    FWIW, I have been looking at this model as I want to avoid stopping at Tim Hortons every morning for a large coffee and breakfast sandwich and start taking my own coffee. I never make coffee on weekends or mornings because lack of free time and the fact we don't have a working brewer right now.

    I got tired of spending $50-100 every three years for a coffee maker. I tried going cheap, but the $16 Sunbeam made awful coffee. I bought the Capresso MT500 in 2006, $180. It's been making excellent coffee for seven years.

    LOL!:cheesygrin: Thanks for the laughs. I have been pretty stuck on Hamilton Beach for my coffee makers. MetLife let me pick a retirement gift when they laid me off, so I picked a fancy Krups machine. The damn thing didn't even make it a year before it stopped working! I tossed a several year old still working Hamilton Beach for that POS. Needless to say, I went right back to Hamilton Beach for a replacement. It does everything I need it to do for my one cup of coffee in the mornings.

    I am using the Capresso Team TS and it is magnificent. It grinds and brews perfectly, and I order my beans from bluemacawcoffee.

    Lateley enjoying their Kona and JBM beans. Blows Starbucks away, and ends up being less costly in the long run. Agree totally on the thermal carafe as the hotplates use too much electricity and ruin the coffee.

    If I don't have at least one POT, I get crabby. Must have some Brazilian blood in me because I can drink coffee all day and night and still sleep like a baby. You want a good one cupper...Nespresso. Think I spelled that right.

    And now for something to brew in that new coffee maker... I like a couple of dark blends from Kicking Horse, 454 Horse Power or Kick A$$ are both good. Also like Pacific Pipeline as a medium blend. Their stuff is fair trade and organic, it's all good...:cheesygrin:
