Looking for pairs for the Dared pre I just purchased. I'm not in a huge hurry and I'm not like some of these guys around here who have one hundred sets. Just want 3 to four pairs that I like. No real budget depending on quality. I'll probably try to run them by the tube God (Brock) to get his input, also.

Thanks!

Here a a few pairs that could work for you. The RCAs are the black plates and have a little more "organic" presentation, the Teles are a little more open on top with more air, and the Mullards can be a little warm and inviting. I actually have three of the Mullards that I would send as a pair since I believe one was noisy. These all performed well when last used, but my tester is with RT1 still. I may be visiting him this weekend and bringing it home and if I can they would all be well tested again on a Hickok USM-118 Cardmatic before shipping. Brock could also give you additional insight to these tubes and I would recommend his opinion since he has direct experience with the Dared. I had one for a period of time, but did not get that much of a chance to roll tubes in it before someone made me an offer I could not turn down and it moved to a new home. George Daniels also has been optimizing his and his insights will be invaluable.

I'd steer clear of the Orange Globe Amperex unless you like the sound. Earlier Amperex are much better sounding and built, IMO. Many of the later Orange globes were manufactured by Richardson Electronics and are not on par w/ original made Amperex.

I believe that 12at7 and 12az7 are interchangeable. They have the same bias setting, and look for the same minimum score on the tube tester. Last week I rehabbed 2 McIntosh mc 75s and on one of the sockets it was labeled 12AT7/12AZ7. So to you tube heads, there is a whole other set of tubes for you to roll in your 12at7 sockets if you so feel inclined. I'm about 90% sure you should have no problems, but still do a little research first.

    Best of luck,
